Michael J. Penna

Old Orchard Beach

Michael James Penna, 63, of Old Orchard Beach passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Miami Beach, Florida on July 5, 1962, a son of Larry and Susan (MacDonald) Penna. At a young age his family relocated to Camp Ellis, Maine. Michael was educated in the Saco School System and graduated from Thornton Academy class of 1981.

Michael had a very strong work ethic and talent for building, so after high school he began his working career as a self employed contractor. He spent a couple of years in the late 1990's working as a supervisor for WCI, a major construction firm located in Florida, but decided to move back to Maine when his daughter Sarah was born.

Michael had a passion for fishing and for the outdoors. He took many camping trips up to the North Maine Woods to do remote camping near lakes and ponds in the Allagash region. He enjoyed being the "Grill Master" at all the family functions and get-togethers. Michael loved being on the ocean, fishing with longtime friend Roger Collard. Michael was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge where he frequently volunteered as a cook.

Most of all, Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved the time he spent with his daughter Sarah, who he shared a special friendship with.

He was predeceased by his father Larry Penna, his sister Melissa Penna, his stepfather L. Philip Bernier, by his two half-brothers Thomas Penna and Ralph Penna, and by his step-sister Therese Bernier Burns.

Michael is survived by his daughter Sarah Penna; by his mother Susan (MacDonald) Penna Bernier; by his siblings Beth Penna Poitras, Steven Penna and Billy Penna. He is also survived by the mother of his daughter, Regan Burke; by his step siblings Lori Anne, Kathi, Rod, Jimmy, Deb and Danny; as well as by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a loving extended family.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at the Sunset Bar & Grill in Old Orchard Beach, date to be determined.
