Michael Joseph “Soups” Sampone, 75, of Amsterdam, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Born on May 1, 1950, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late John and Rae (Salerno) Sampone.
Mike was a proud graduate of Amsterdam public schools and Niagara University. He went on to enjoy a successful career with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, proudly retiring in 2005. During his time with the state, Mike served as Chairman for the Taxation Department and was heavily involved in the September 11th World Trade Center Relief fund, helping families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike was deeply devoted to serving others and his community. He gave generously his time and energy, contributing to many organizations, including Bigelow Weavers, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, where he served as Chairman of the Boad of Trustees, and the Michael Paul Pallotta Scholarship Foundation.
Known for his generosity and big heart, Mike never hesitated to help someone in need. He also lived life to the fullest, cherishing his rounds of golf, time spent with family and friends, his “boys” trips to Myrtle Beach or Atlantic City, and his Italian heritage. Those who knew him well also knew he was a sucker for a shot of Crown Royal and a good cigar. You may even have been lucky enough to have caught him singing the 3 Stooges Alphabet song if he had enjoyed enough of that Crown Royal!
Mike was predeceased by his wife, Ann (Armstrong) Sampone, and his brother, John Sampone. He leaves behind his sons, Chris and Tim Sampone; his brother, Nicholas (Janet) Sampone, along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends who will miss him greatly.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mike's family on Thursday, September 18, 2025 between 4 PM. and 7 PM at Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St. Amsterdam, NY. A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mike’s memory to The Michael Paul Pallotta Memorial Scholarship Foundation c/o Nick Pallotta, 12982 Soundings Road, Lusby, MD 20657 or Montgomery County SPCA, 1232 NY 5-S, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Mike will be remembered as a loving father, brother, and friend whose legacy of kindness, laughter, and community spirit lives on in all who knew him.
