The open field between the Bleachery and the Yardley Pond.
The open lot between Morgan Ave and the Delaware canal.
The homemade field, by the barn, at Scammell's Corner.
The playground at the old Yardley Elementary School.
These are the places that 1950's Yardley elementary kids
would ride their bikes to and play baseball all summer long.
This was 40yrs before they made the movie "The Sandlot".
In the 1950's, the Yardley kids would go out and make their
own fun, their own world. Using their imagination, energy,
and creativity. No surfing a computer all day. No Tiktok.
And, for several hours a day? They would transform these
neighbor sandlots into Ebbets Field, Connie Mack, the Polo
Grounds, or Yankee Stadium. The boro kids that lived those
days? Buddy, Bobby, Billy, Robbie, Ronnie, Richie, Artie, Dave,
Mike, Skip, Eddie, Johnny, Kevin, and "The Wahl". Will always
come to mind when they think back on those days.
It is for that reason that Mike will never be forgotten. I played
Little League, Babe Ruth level and High School baseball with
Michael Tapper. Brother Billy was a classmate since 3rd grade.
But, it was those summer days of Sandlot that made us family.
The kids listed, above? Know who they are. Forever linked.
