It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Whatley, a beloved man whose deep compassion, generosity and quiet strength left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Michael departed this life on February 7, 2025, in his home, surrounded by family, friends and pets who loved him.
Born on December 18th, 1961, in Fort Knox, Kentucky, Michael lived an incredible life rooted in purpose and faith. He was the son of Thomas Leslie Whatley and Pamala Moss Whatley; brother of Kevin Charles Whatley, Pauline Perkins and Paul Whatley; father to Michael Leslie Johnson; dog and cat dad to Sophie, Luci, Jake, OB, Honey, Pumpkin, Lucky, Jeanette, Sam, George, Nero and Tiger, all by whom he was predeceased.
Michael loved his family and was proud of his heritage. He was the loving husband of Christi Whatley and the proud dog dad of Abby and Gracie, "the girls". In addition to his wife and the girls, he is survived by five nieces and nephews: Lesley Younger, Paul Bland, Kevin Charles (Michelle) Whatley, Jr., Dana (Dustin) Hall, and Jonee Whatley; sister-in-law Clara Whatley-McGee; and many more great nieces and nephews.
Though born in Kentucky, Michael and his family relocated to Greenwood, Mississippi, which became his childhood home. From an early age, Michael developed an interest and concern for all animals, which ultimately inspired his career choice. He worked diligently both in school and various jobs, and in spite of humble beginnings, he successfully achieved his goals. Following his graduation from Greenwood High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was recruited to The Pet Clinic in Hot Springs, AR in 1991, which he later purchased, and Hot Springs remained his home. Michael's career as a veterinarian is marked by skilled precision and dedication to his clients and patients, fueled by compassion and kindness. He worked endless hours, including days off, evenings and weekends, always mindful of someone's pet who might require a little extra TLC. He was adored for his unique sense of humor, and his dry wit would bring laughter for days. He served as mentor and confidante to colleagues and friends, as he was always available to listen. In his spare time, Michael enjoyed hunting, travel, visiting historical sites, and spending time with family and friends. Michael's strength distinguished him from others, particularly as he quietly fought with all his might the illness that would eventually claim him.
Beyond his accomplishments and roles, Michael will be remembered for his lifelong friendships, his gentle soul, personal strength, and the grace he so generously offered to others.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Hot Springs from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Hot Springs at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2025. Pallbearers include Mark Bell, Tol Berryhill, Paul Bland, Jamie Clark, Steve Davis, Greg Howell, Odie Hughes, Ted Ortigo, Brandon Younger and Thomas Younger.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to CHI St. Vincent Foundation - Cancer Services or the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Whatley was my veterinarian for the past 18 years. He was the most calm, empathetic vet I have ever used. He had to put several of my animals down through the years and he would tear up along with me crying my eyes out each time. He was so genuine, knowledgeable, giving, and a true professional. I can't express how much every one that knew him will miss his positive presence in our lives. Thank you, Dr. Whatley for your compassionate care for my fur babies for so many years. May God give your wife and family peace and fond memories they will cherish for years to come.
