Michael J. Wuerstle, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Joliet, IL, at the age of 84. Born on December 18, 1940, in Dunkirk, NY. Mike's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and the joy of discovery.

Mike is proceeded in death by his parents Ferdinand Wuerstle and Eunice Wuerstle (nee Karin); brother-in-law, William (Bill) McGraw.

Mike's early years in Dunkirk were filled with the warmth of family and the close-knit community that would shape his values and character. Mike answered the call of duty and served in the United States Navy from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1969. His time in the Navy, which included service during the Vietnam War, was a testament to his courage and commitment to his country. His service forged lifelong friendships, notably with John Trusty, a fellow Navy veteran who remained a steadfast companion through the years.

While completing his education with a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis University, Mike embarked on a distinguished career in the medical field. He dedicated 30 years to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL, working in the lab with a passion for helping others that was evident to all who worked alongside him. His commitment to healthcare continued at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL, where he worked until his well-deserved retirement in 2020.

Mike's intellectual curiosity was insatiable. He had a profound love for reading, with interests that spanned history, science, and various languages. This love of learning was a cornerstone of his life, and he often shared fascinating facts and stories with those around him. His enthusiasm for sports was equally fervent, with a particular fondness for tennis and the high-speed thrills of Formula 1 racing.

Those who knew Mike will remember him as a man of great humor, friendliness, and intelligence. His ability to light up a room with his wit and his readiness to lend a helping hand are qualities that endeared him to many. His presence was a source of joy and comfort, and his laughter was contagious.

Mike is survived by his loving family, including his sons Daniel (Barbara) Wuerstle and David Wuerstle, his daughter Amanda Wuerstle, and his sister Virginia McGraw. He is also lovingly remembered by his two nieces a nephew and several cousins. Each of them carries forward the legacy of his kindness, his love for life, and the lessons he imparted.

As we bid farewell to Michael J. Wuerstle, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, and his spirit will forever be a beacon of the joy and camaraderie he so effortlessly created around him. Mike's story is one of a life that, through its very essence, enriched the tapestry of countless others. He will be deeply missed, yet his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Friends over 50, the staff at Lightways Hospice and the many doctors, nurses and medical professionals who provided such dedicated care and support.
