Michael Zdyrko Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Torbert Funeral Chapels on Dec. 13, 2025.
Michael Zdyrko, age 79, completed his life's extraordinary journey on December 8, 2025.
A man of strength, purpose, laughter, and faith, he lived every day with the same determination and
heart that carried him through 25 years of honorable military service with the United States Air
Force and 33 years protecting the people as a security officer with the Delaware Capitol Police,
upholding the very values he had long defended.
Michael received his associate degree from Georgia Military College and, throughout both
careers, was decorated with numerous military awards and commendations. He embodied
integrity, discipline, determination, courage, strength, and resilience. These qualities defined his
intentions and acts of service, both in and out of uniform.
His service took him and his family across the world with each new assignment an adventure,
every destination an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with other cultures. From foreign
and domestic landmarks and islands to remote outposts, his devotion to duty never wavered,
and the experiences encountered along the way became a cherished part of their family story.
Yet beyond his achievements and accolades, it was the times that he let his guard down to
show his heart and humor that made him unforgettable. A master storyteller known for his
anecdotes, jokes, and perfectly timed compliments, he could turn on the charm and fill a room
with laughter and warmth in an instant. Whether recounting an old adventure, offering advice
veiled in good-natured teasing, or sharing a story you hadn't heard or maybe one you had heard
many, many times. Michael's words created connections wherever he went.
Michael found deep peace in the simple beauty of the world around him. He loved nature's
stillness, the art of photography, and, much to his family's amusement, technology, and the thrill
of shopping for a "really good deal." He was happiest with a camera in hand, a story on his lips,
and his wife by his side. His devotion to studying scripture, and his faith, provided him with
peace and also insight into the man he wanted to be.
As we gather to pay tribute to Michael's legacy, we celebrate his love for family, friends, duty,
and strength. He embodied devotion, especially near the end of his life, when he prioritized the
well-being and health of his wife, Angie over his own. He was a devoted husband to Angie, a
proud father to his three children, a loving father-in-law to his daughter-in-law, and a doting
grandfather to his beloved granddaughter. He was also a loyal and supportive brother to his
three sisters, as well as a cherished cousin, uncle, and friend. The adventurous spirit that
carried him across oceans now lives on in those who loved him, each a reflection of his
courage, curiosity, and determination.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and John; his brother-in-law, Jerry; and his
daughter-in-law, Tiffany.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life from 4:00–5:00 p.m. on December 16, 2025,
at Torbert Funeral Chapels, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, DE.
Interment with military honors will follow on December 30, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465
Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the physicians, nurses, and specialists of the Bayhealth
Cardiology Department for their kindness and exceptional care.
He soared on freedom's wings as a United States Air Force Master Sergeant and now rests in
peaceful skies.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the American Heart Association in his honor at www.heart.org.
