Arthur Swain Lewis Sr
Art Lewis Sr passed away on December 5th, 2025, in Eden Hill Rehab Center. He was 95.
Art was born in a brickhouse on Kings Highway Dover, January 8th, 1930. He was the son of John Edwin Lewis and Doris Townsend Lewis.
Art spent his childhood on the family farm in Dover with his brothers, Jack and Fred. He graduated from Dover High School in 1948. Art was proud of the fact he played 5 years of varsity football, including two undefeated seasons. He was Vice President of his senior class and helped coordinate many class reunions over the years.
In 1948 Art served in the US Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, he then went into the US Army Reserves and served 21 years, retiring as a SGT Major. After one year of active duty, he attended the University of Delaware where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
In 1953 Art married Ann Davis, his high school sweetheart and they moved to Wilmington. Art started his insurance career with Aetna Casualty Insurance Company, he then moved on to J.A. Montgomery Inc., at the time the company was the largest independent agency in the state. After Achieving the position of Vice President, he opened a Dover branch for the company in 1965. With Art's success in the insurance Industry Ann and Art were able to travel extensively in the US and overseas, attending multiple insurance conventions.
During this time Art and Ann started a family which grew to five sons. They enjoyed their sons activities and encouraged them to participate in sports, mainly baseball. Dad, always the disciplinarian encouraged/told his sons they would be boy scouts. He was a Eagle Scout, A rank each of his sons would achieve.
He was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his sons and their families at Art and Ann's vacation home in Rehoboth. He would make a point of attending his grandchildren's band concerts, school plays, dance recitals, along with baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer games.
If family and work did not keep Art busy enough. He had professional and civic activities to keep him busy. Always a leader.. Art was Past President, independent insurance agents of Delaware, Past Commander, Del Vets, Post 2, Past President, Dover, Kiwanis, which he received the legion of honor award for over 50 years of service. Past President, Sons of American Revolution. He was a lifetime member of Peoples Church Dover where he has served on the finance committee and board of trustees. Art was also on the board of directors for the Dover YMCA. Memberships included the Elks and American Legion. He delivered meals on wheels for over 50 years in the Dover area.
In addition to spending time at the beach with mom and family dad enjoyed deer hunting on the family farm with Wilmington buddies John and Ray. Going fishing with his cousin Steve Townsend. Golfing in the Del Vets league and attending Dover NASCAR races with his sons and extended family.
Art will be missed as a loving dad, poppop, big poppop, uncle and friend.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ann Davis Lewis, son, Jeffrey Lewis, and brothers, Jack and Fred Lewis.
Dad is survived by his children, Arthur Lewis Jr (Julie), Roger Lewis (Anne), David Lewis (Janine), and Bradley Lewis (Vicky); his grandchildren, Rebecca Donahue (Rich), Rachel Grant, Arthur III (Christine), Eric (Amber), Britney, Heather Flowers (Cam) Virginia (Abee) and Carolyn. His great grandchildren, Landen and Haylie Donahue, Calvin, Gwen and Boden Lewis, and Nora Flowers.
Funeral services will be held 12:00pm, Tuesday December 16th, 2025, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, Delaware. Friends and family may call at 11am. Interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Peoples Church, 46 S Bradford Street, Dover, Delaware.
