Mike "Doc" Speece, born on February 12, 1947, in York, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a beloved figure in his community, leaving an indelible mark through both his professional and personal endeavors.
After completing his education at Auburn High School in 1965, Doc went on to earn his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri. His career as a veterinarian began in Virginia, where he established a loyal clientele among the Amish community. His expertise and dedication led him back to Auburn, where he founded his own veterinary practice. While residing in Auburn, he became well-regarded for his work with many of the surrounding sale barns and managed his own cow herd in the scenic Sand Hills. His passion for animal care and commitment to the farming community were evident throughout his career.
A long-time member of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association, Doc’s pursuit of knowledge and skill in veterinary medicine was matched by his engagement in the natural resources of Nebraska. He served on the board of the Nemaha Natural Resources District, contributing his talents to initiatives such as the Steamboat Trace Trail and the Duck and Buck Creek projects, which greatly benefited the southeastern Nebraska community. He also played a key role in initiating a heifer development program, demonstrating his dedication to the agricultural sector.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Doc was known for his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed duck, pheasant, and prairie chicken hunting, and he found joy in woodworking and riding horses. His participation in team roping during rodeos illustrated his spirited approach to life and passion for equestrian activities.
Doc is survived by his daughters, Heidi and Gretchen; his grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Dr. Bernie Hillyer; along with other relatives and many friends he cherished as family. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Ross and Donna Mae (Parker) Speece.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 31, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Arbor Manor Steakhouse, located at 1617 Central Ave, Auburn, NE 68305.
