Mildred Caldwell Obituary

Mildred Mercedes Caldwell passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, in Stuart, Florida. She was a longtime resident of Florida. Born on February 3, 1929, in Kingston, St. Andrew, Jamaica, Mildred was the beloved daughter of the late Wilfred and Henrietta Thomas. She was the second child and the first daughter in their family.

Mildred attended Shortwood Elementary and High School in Jamaica before moving to London, England, where she pursued a career in nursing. With dedication and compassion, she trained as a nurse midwife and went on to serve countless families in the medical field.

Eventually, Mildred moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she met the love of her life, the late Claude Caldwell. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love and faith. Mildred was a devoted member of Lighthouse Cathedral Church in Detroit, where she served her community with quiet humility and deep devotion.

In 1989, Mildred welcomed her niece Ann-Marie Broomfield into her life, raising her as her own daughter. Her heart expanded again in 1995 when she became a grandmother figure to her grandnephew, Nicholas Broomfield, who brought her immeasurable comfort and joy after the passing of her husband the previous year.

In 2001, Mildred moved with her family to Royal Palm Beach, Florida, where she embraced a new chapter. She treasured every moment with her grandnephews Nicholas and Nathaniel and later with her great-grandnephew Anthony, born in 2014, who became her greatest joy. Whether it was swinging at the park, strolling through malls, reading, or tending to her garden, Mildred found beauty in the simple pleasures of life.

A woman of strong faith, Mildred became an active member of Faith Deliverance Church of God. She led Bible study groups in her community and never stopped sharing her love of scripture. Even as she faced the challenges of dementia in her later years, she continued to sing hymns, recite scripture, and pray her beloved Psalms.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Henrietta Thomas; her brother Livingston Thomas; and her sisters, Sybil and Thelma Thomas.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, remembered dearly by her sister Ramona Bayton; her brother Barrington Thomas; her daughter-niece Ann-Marie Broomfield (Everald); nieces and nephews Janet Thomas, Winona Silvera, Mark Bayton, Phillip Bayton, Aston Bayton, and Samuel Bayton; grandnieces and grandnephews Michael Chevannes, Melissa Bayton, Philip Bayton Jr., Nicholas Broomfield, Nathaniel Broomfield, Kaedia Silvera, Johnathan Bayton, and Lexy Bayton; great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews Justin Chevannes and Anthony Broomfield; and many more extended family members and friends, including her dear friend Modesta Everett.

Mildred’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith touched every life she encountered. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

There will be a graveside service on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Rolling Oaks Cemetery located at 2200 SW Del Rio Boulevard in Port Saint Lucie, Florida 34953 at 11:00 AM.
