Mildred Mary Garner, known affectionately to friends and family as Millie, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, in
Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 84. Born on October 3, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Millie was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her.
Millie's early years in Brooklyn set the stage for a life filled with love, learning, and teaching. She brought the warmth of her personality to Corpus Christi, where she became a cherished member of the community. Millie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose family was the epicenter of her world. She is survived by her loving children: Katherine Mehr (Steven) of Yorktown, Virginia; Matthew Garner of Houston, Texas; Robert Garner (Fernando) of Dallas, Texas; and Luke Garner (Deb) of Pflugerville, Texas. Millie's joy was multiplied by her four grandchildren, Steve Mehr (Katie), Emily Rupe (Nicholas), Daniel Mehr, and David Garner, III, as well as her four adoring great-grandchildren.
Millie's legacy is further cherished in the memories of her extended family and the countless friends who were touched by her kindness and spirited personality. Though she is preceded in death by her son David Garner, Junior, her granddaughter Christina Garner, her parents Mary Alice and Leo Walsh, and her beloved aunt and uncle Cecilia and Theodore Dauble, the impact of her love continues to resonate with all who were fortunate enough to know her.
An alumna of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Millie's passion for education was evident in her attainment of a Bachelor of Arts and two Master's Degrees. Her commitment to education extended beyond her own achievements as she went on to inspire young minds as a teacher at Bishop High School and Del Mar College. Millie's dedication to her students and her craft left an indelible mark on the many lives she touched through her many years of service.
Millie's interests were as rich and varied as her personality. She had an enduring love for movies, which she enjoyed both as a form of entertainment and as a way to connect with others. Her competitive spirit shone brightly while playing games, and she was known for both her strategic mind and her gracious sportsmanship. Reading was another of Millie's passions, allowing her to explore worlds beyond her own and to share those adventures with friends and family.
Millie's life was one of purpose, joy, and love. Her radiant smile and infectious laughter will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of experiencing them. As we bid farewell to Millie, we celebrate a life well-lived and cherish the many memories she has left behind. Her spirit, wisdom, and warmth will continue to guide and comfort us, just as the stars continue to shine even after they have set beyond the horizon.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Millie Garner was a treasure to her family, a pillar in her community, and an inspiration to all. As we say goodbye, we take solace in knowing that her legacy of love, education, and laughter will live on through the generations.
