Mildred Marguerite (McAllister) Sigmund, 99, of Northridge Village, Ames, was called home by her Lord and Savior on August 31, 2024. Mildred was born March 1, 1925, to William and Claribel (Robison) McAllister in Booneville, Iowa. She graduated from Van Meter High School at age 15. She obtained a teaching certificate and was teaching in a one-room school near Luther at age 17. Her children actually got to see her receive her Bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1969.
Mildred married Logan Sigmund on December 22, 1946. Mildred and Logan began their life together on a farm near Luther. Later, they moved to their farm near Stanhope. They had three children: Linda Knowles, Carol Holmes, and Dale Sigmund.
Mildred loved children and taught school in Luther, Stanhope, and Stratford. She also taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was an active member of Stanhope Parish Church. After retiring from teaching, Mildred enjoyed leading story time at the Stanhope Library. One of her favorite activities was planning a float for the annual Watermelon Day parade.
Mildred loved to cook and bake. Her specialties included: chicken and homemade noodles, onion rings, oyster stew, cherry pie, and her special chocolate pie at Christmas.
When she retired from teaching, Mildred purchased an embroidery machine. She used it to make quilts and clothing for her grandchildren and potholders to share with her family and friends.
Mildred's greatest earthly treasure was her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were extra special to her.
Mildred is survived by her children, Carol (Bob) Holmes and Dale (Janet) Sigmund; grandchildren: Jim (Shannon) Holmes, Christina (Sean) McAvoy, Matthew Sigmund, Laura (Patrick) Huff, and April Sigmund; great-grandchildren: Anders, Sebastian and Kaleb Holmes, Cynnava and Grayson McAvoy, and Rory Huff; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ward, Mildred Sigmund and Mary Lou Sigmund; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Logan Sigmund; daughter, Linda Knowles; parents, William and Claribel McAllister; brother, Donald McAllister; and sister, Darlene Bentall.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone.
