Mitchell Larsen Obituary

Mitchell Williams Larsen

1970 ~ 2024

Orem, Utah - Mitchell Williams Larsen, beloved father, husband, friend, and physician, unexpectedly passed away on May 6, 2024. He was one week away from celebrating his 54th birthday. He died from a blood clot, following complications related to a recent back surgery. With shattered hearts, his family members unexpectedly say goodbye to this extraordinary, larger-than-life, one-of-a-kind man.

Mitch (Dr. Larsen, Meetch, Padre, Commander, Dad) was born on May 13, 1970 in Cottonwood Heights to Gary and Suzanne Larsen. He was raised in a loving family who enjoyed working, traveling, skiing and rafting together. Between many suspensions for pranks, Mitch attended Brighton High School, where he and his friends jokingly tried out for (and made!) the cheerleading squad. After high school, Mitch attended BYU and excelled in his studies, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Physics and a minor in Music. He was a member of the BYU Men's chorus and was a gifted musician in voice, saxophone, piano and guitar.

From 1989-1991, Mitch took a break from his education to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brasilia, Brazil. He married his beautiful wife Stephenie Sorensen in 1997. Their love was the embodiment of what a healthy, fun and happy marriage can be. Stephenie was Mitch's light and backbone throughout their 27 years of marriage. His kids will always remember the love and support that they consistently showed to each other. Following in his father's footsteps, Mitch pursued a career as an orthopedic surgeon at Georgetown University. He then completed an orthopedic residency at UT San Antonio and a shoulder fellowship at Duke University. Mitch was a gifted surgeon whom his medical colleagues jokingly referred to as a "Ginga Ninja" and "an absolute wizard" with a scope and scalpel.

An avid reader, Mitch was knowledgeable about many subjects–especially history. His charisma, energy and humor made life a wild, amazing ride. His passion and zest for life turned each day into an adventure. Mitch was good to the core; his integrity and authenticity were of highest importance to him. He was true to what he believed–always a defender of what is right and good.

Stephenie and Mitch's six beloved children were his top priority. He always took their phone calls–even if he were in the operating room–he'd simply put the call on speaker. He taught his children to "work hard and play hard" as he shared his passion for the outdoors and love of adventure with them, creating amazing memories along the way. Every future ski run down Great Scott, backyard barbecue, rolled kayak, conquered rapid, Bear Lake vacation, and trip down the Salmon river will always be warmed by his infectious smile and loving memory. Mitch fit more into his 53 years than most people could fit in a lifetime.

Mitch's untimely death leaves a giant hole in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, patients, and community. But his passion for life and adventure will forever live on in his children who will continue to jump into stomach-dropping adventures in his honor. Most importantly, they will want to love large, laugh lots, and give back like their dad.

Mitch is survived by his cherished six children: Grace, Jake, Isabel, Caroline, William, and Wyatt; his loving wife Stephenie; his mom Suzanne Williams Larsen; his three siblings: David (Camille) Larsen, Amy (Michael) Zaharis, and Brady Larsen; and many adoring nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Gary Fisher Larsen.

The viewing will be held at the Larsen residence on Saturday, May 11th from 10:00am-12:00pm. Funeral Service at 12:30pm, also at the Larsen home.

Thinking about Mitch today. I want to say thank you for performing surgery on my femur back in February, 2019. I was a reckless teenager and I broke my femur after making a wrong jump while skiing. After being taken to the hospital, Mitch performed surgery on my femur that night and thanks to him, I can walk again. To this day, I'm thankful for him and for the healing he provided.

I am heartbroken to hear of Dr. Larsen's passing. He has done so much good for so many of us. He gave me new shoulders and, thanks to his great skill, they're both perfect now! He was always kind and compassionate and had a smile that lit up the room. I pray his family will feel sweet peace and comfort in the coming days.

I am saddened at the news of the passing of the gifted surgeon who willingly agreed to a "next day" repair of my severely torn rotator cuff. The excellence of that experience has been a tender spot in my memory, even more so now than before, as I remember his kindness and support for me during a difficult time.

I have been a patient of Dr. Larsen for over 15 years. He did a knee replacement for me years ago and been treating my two shoulders for several years. I figured he would do the replacements soon. When I last saw him in December he said I really needed to be thinking of surgery soon. I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends who worked closely with him. Life is so precarious we just don´t know what is around the corner for us. Stay strong and smile everyday in remembrance of him.

I have to admit I´m in a bit of shock. Dr. Larsen was a wonderful man and surgeon. He did a knee replacement and two shoulder replacements on me. I´m very privileged to have his "signature" on me. He had such a great sense of humor and a wonderful bedside manner. He was truly an amazing man and I will miss him.

Dr. Larsen was a great person and a talented and caring surgeon. He was always sincerely interested in how i was doing before and after my shoulder replacement and i had no problems with healing up and getting back into action. He was a great guy professionally and personally.

Dr. Larsen operated on my knee 7 weeks ago. I was in a ski accident and he checked in on me throughout my hospital stay and then performed my second operation - acl repair. I hadn’t seen the scar from my first surgery until we were in the prep room for surgery. He was in the room when the nurses took the bandages off and the shock of the 10 inch scar and stitches started to hit me. I started weeping uncontrollably knowing that my knee already had this trauma and was about to go into another surgery with more cuts and scars. Dr. Larsen was 7 weeks out of his own surgery of tearing his Achilles- also from skiing. He was in his boot and walking with a slight limp and there he was comforting me and patting my arm saying it’s ok. He said that his injury had helped him feel more empathy for his patients because he knew what they were going through. I will never forget his bedside manner that day. He was so compassionate and so empathetic towards me and the fear and shock I was experiencing from my injury. He told me he would ski again one day and so would I. He was a healer in every way and I will be forever touched by his love and kindness as well as his knowledge and expertise that helped me to walk again. Rest in peace Dr. Larsen and I have no doubt that you are healing souls in heaven - just like you did on earth. Sending all my love to your beautiful family ❤

Dr Larsen was the best. He performed seven surgeries on me. He brought cookies to my doctors office to introduce himself when he came to Revere..
My doctor said why don´t you try this guy?
The day of my surgery he called me at the hospital to tell me he had been up all night with his wife delivering their baby. He said "I will be there a little late "
Our friend flew up here from California to have Mitch do both of her shoulder surgeries.
We will miss him and send our sincere sympathy to his wife and kids. Clarice Nilson

Oh! How my heart cries and deeply aches for the loss of Dr. Larsen, and for his sweet wife and children. What a huge, tragic loss. He came into my life several years ago when my regular orthopedic man was not available and I needed immediate care. He was a mere one year into his practice and I never looked back. Such expertise and knowledge, such sincere kindness, caring, humility and integrity I have never known in another man, ever. He performed 3 total knees for me, as well as a wealth of other knee procedures, and was available 24/7; even gave me his private cell number for emergencies to file under "Dr. Bones." I loved him like a son-he was a wonderful human being. May his family be blessed with comfort and healing.

Not everyone who is as accomplished as Mitch remains as genuinely kind and warm as him. Our family felt his kindness the first time we met him and each interaction after. He and Steph made our oldest son feel so welcome in their home. Such an open door/open arms place to be. Mitch performed 3 knee surgeries for our family - every time we felt grateful to be greeted as friends with the great smile and personality he had. You could always tell that Mitch Larsen just has a good heart. We are so sad for the family and send our love.

My heart aches for the whole Larsen family. The unexpected passing of Mitch leaves a huge hole in all our hearts. We´ve had the privilege of being neighbors to the wonderful Larsen family for 43 years and to watch this remarkable man grow up from a sweet little boy to a wonderful father, doctor and friend. The Suzanne and Gary Larsen family loved hard, played hard, worked together and excelled in all endeavors they pursued.
We love our Larsen family neighbors!! We express our love and prayers of peace and comfort for all of you at this difficult time.

Mitch, I'm heartbroken for your passing! I remember many great times on the Salmon River where we guided together for several years. I remember you bringing your guitar and entertaining us at the campfire. I asked, do you know "Classical Gas"? The reply was no. The following year we sat around the campfire and he played that great guitar rift with amazing accuracy!
There is also a man alive today, thanks to Mitch's presence of mind, that after flipping his boat, managed to cut the man loose from the boat frame and bring him to shore. In doing so, Mitch cut his finger and was flown out for surgery to repair it.
I hadn't seen Mitch in years, but made the trip to Provo for the 70th birthday of our beloved "river boss" Verle, and we relived memories and caught up on each other's lives. I will always remember and miss you Mitch! Rest in Peace

Mitch and Stephenie became friends of our family when they lived in San Antonio during Mitch´s orthopedic residency. They had a beautiful young family and their home was the welcoming hub for many friends and medical associates. I was recently divorced and parenting 7 children from age 9 to 23 on my own. Mitch and Stephenie stood in the gap serving as youth leaders and mentors to my children. Their friendship and example made a difference in my life and the lives of my children. We grieve their loss alongside them.

Dr. Larsen gave me a new knee in April. I had been seeing another doctor for my knee but went to see Dr. Larsen with my sister and he was so kind and caring that I changed doctors right then. He was a wonderful doctor and surrounded himself with a staff just as caring and wonderful as he was. I will remember his family in my prayers in this difficult time.

Your husband, father, son friend, was also a friend of mine. He did a shoulder repair on my left side in Oct. He also did a reverse implant on my right side 6 weeks ago. I have always been impressed with his dedication, concern, and expertise in his association with me. Prayers and love to you all. Thanks for sharing him with me. Craig

I have had the pleasure of having both of my shoulders replaced over the last 3 1/2 years by in my opinion the best surgeon I´ve ever had work on me and at almost 74 years old I´ve had several. I had my left one done 3 1/2 years ago and it´s 125% and my right one was done last October and it´s 90% already. The first time I ever met with Dr. Larson I jokingly told him he had a striking resemblance to Conan O´Brien. Right off the bad I had gained a good friendship. Every time I saw him I reminded him of that and he thought it was quite funny and cool. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing. I am so grateful to have known him in my lifetime.

I asked a fellow nurse at work whom I should go to for my shoulder repair and without hesitation she said, "Mitch Larsen. He is kind and considerate and I would trust him with any of my family´s surgeries. She had worked in OR for years. He´s very accomplished and I have been extremely happy with two shoulder surgeries. I felt so sad he came to work on a scooter. I knew he had to be in pain but you wouldn´t know it. He just kept smiling. I´m thankful I got the chance to see him recently and tell him I was sorry I complain when he is in so much worse circumstances. May God bless you all.

We are devastated by Mitches' passing. We watched that energetic little boy with all the freckles from his birth. All those summers that we spent with the Larsen family at Bear Lake watching are children grow up together and watching Mitch with all his antics and his endless energy. He was the epitome of his father Gary. We grieve with all his family and friends and patients. Ive pray that you are having a wonderful reunion with your father. WE love you.

I worked with Dr. Larsen for almost 20 years. He always treated nursing staff with respect and kindness. He used to bring his kids with him when he rounded on Sundays. My confidence in Mitch was represented by me referring my son to him for shoulder surgery and he diagnosed my grandson´s cancer. I love this man and he will be sorely missed. He is an example of excellence for all of us.
