On July 19, 2024, the world lost a lovely man. Mitchell Swaden was an avid cyclist, a mountain climber, a self-taught car and bicycle mechanic and woodworker, a maker of bagels and cream cheese and a damn fine lawyer. More importantly, Mitchell was a loving husband, father, Zayde, brother, uncle and friend. Mitchell was an Assistant Public Defender in the Hennepin County Public Defender's Office for 30 years. He also was co-founder and co-owner of Bagel & Bagel in Kansas City, which later became Einstein Bros Bagels. On the logo, he's the brother with the beard alongside Debra's brother. Mitchell is survived by his loving wife, Debra Lozoff Swaden; treasured daughter, Hannah and son-in-law, Linden Weiswerda; beloved son, Eli and daughter-in-law, Leah; grandchildren, Zev, Alma and Levon; brother, Marty and his wife, Liz; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews and his lifelong best friend, Rick Cohen. I knew Mitchell when I was a judge and he was a lawyer practicing as a public defender in Hennepin County (he didn't need the practice, he was masterful). I'm so sad to hear that we've lost a kind, gentle, sweet, brilliant man. He was fiercely committed to justice, an advocate, with a kind and gentle smile, a brilliance and tenacity to make sure that justice would have a fighting chance that day, Bless his heart and memory.
