Monroe the Therapy Dog left this world on September 12, 2025, but her legacy of unwavering companionship and comfort will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Born in Georgia, Monroe's journey led her to State College, Pennsylvania, with her handler, Karen Keller.

An American Kennel Club registered Australian Shepherd, Monroe had a serendipitous start with Karen. Chosen not just by Karen but it seems by destiny, Monroe's vibrant spirit was evident from the moment she ran towards her future companion. Named after the iconic Marilyn Monroe, Monroe carried a name that resonated with strength and character. From her effortless potty-training to her intuitive interactions with the grieving, Monroe proved to be an "easy dog to work with," a testament to her intelligence and empathy.

Guided by Karen, Monroe's life was one of purpose and passion. Certified by Therapy Dogs International in 2016, Monroe embarked on a path, dedicating herself to the emotional well-being of others. Karen and Monroe were wholeheartedly committed to bringing solace to families during their most challenging moments. Monroe's presence meant the transformation of sorrows into moments of peace, as she instinctively knew how to provide comfort

Throughout her life, Monroe's presence brought hope to hospitals, nursing homes, and Koch Funeral Home. Her innate ability to connect with those in mourning was particularly poignant. At a grief education and support gathering, Monroe, without prompting, tenderly engaged with each participant, weaving her way into their hearts with a reassuring presence.

As we remember Monroe, let us embrace the unconditional love she represented. In the words of Helen Keller, "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose; all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Monroe's spirit continues to inspire us to reach out with compassion and to find solace in the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions.

Thank you, Monroe. You will be missed.
