Monte Barnes Obituary

Monte Lee Barnes, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, coach, educator, and servant of Christ, entered his eternal home on November 12, 2025, at the age of 73, after a courageous battle with ALS. Born on February 24, 1952, in McKinney, Texas, Monte spent his life pouring into others with the humility, kindness, and strength that reflected his deep and abiding faith in the Lord.

Monte graduated from Lazbuddie High School in 1970 and first attended West Texas A&M University to play football before transferring to Texas Tech University, where he pitched for the baseball team. God’s calling on his life to mentor and lead young people became evident as he began his career in coaching and education at Bovina ISD, later serving in Sweetwater and Farwell ISD. His journey of faithful service eventually led him to become Superintendent at Roscoe and Bowie ISD. Throughout his 31 years in education, Monte led with integrity, grace, and compassion—impacting students, teachers, athletes, and fellow educators in ways that will echo for generations. He retired in 2008, leaving a legacy rooted in purpose and faithfulness.

Monte embraced life as a gift from God and enjoyed His creation with a grateful heart. He cherished time on the golf course, loved sports, enjoyed coaching and found peace and joy in the outdoors—especially while fishing or quail hunting. Some of his most treasured moments were spent with family in the mountains of Colorado, where God’s beauty surrounded them. Monte was also blessed by the friendship and fellowship he shared while working part-time with his dear friend, Cecil Davis.

Above all, Monte loved his family deeply. He honored and cherished his wife, Delayne, with steadfast devotion. He celebrated the lives of his children and delighted in watching them grow, compete, and pursue their God-given paths. As a proud grandfather, he found immeasurable joy in attending the activities of his grandchildren and praising the Lord for each milestone they reached. His presence, encouragement, and spiritual example will forever shape their lives.

Monte is survived by his loving wife, Delayne; his daughter Becky and son-in-law Creed Newman; his sons Brannon Barnes and Beau Barnes, and daughter-in-law Joey Barnes; and his cherished grandchildren Taylor, Van, Hayes, Brynlee, Brody, and Brooklyn. He is also survived by his brother Ronny Barnes and sister-in-law Cindy Barnes; his sister Marilyn Hinkson and brother-in-law Frank Hinkson; his brother Mark Barnes and sister-in-law Karen Barnes; along with many nieces and nephews who will continue to carry his light forward. Monte was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Hester Barnes, who now welcome him into eternal rest.

A celebration of Monte’s life and faith will be held on November 22, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Beltway Park Church, South Campus in Abilene, TX. Family and friends are invited to gather from 2:00–3:00 PM for visitation and a time of sharing memories. Together, we rejoice in the promise of Christ—that Monte is healed, whole, and safely in the arms of his Savior.  In Monte's honor, please consider making a donation to the ALS foundation instead of sending flowers.

Monte’s life was a testimony of faith, love, and perseverance. Though he has finished his race here on earth, his legacy lives on in all who were blessed to know him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
