Morton Rumberg Obituary

Morton Myron Rumberg
October 28, 1936 - May 24, 2023
Roseville, California - After a brave battle with cancer, Morton Myron Rumberg of Roseville, CA passed away peacefully on May 24, 2023, with his dear family at his side.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on Oct. 28, 1936, to Harry and Marion (Leavitt) Rumberg, Mort is survived by his beloved wife Susan Higashi Rumberg; sons Stephen (Naomi) and Michael (Marisela); grandsons Nicholas, Louis, and Mark; brother Alan; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mort was a proud veteran who served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, with assignments in Vietnam and the Pentagon on the National Military Command Center team supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff. For eight years he taught aircrews rescue and survival skills and also served as a swimming coach and Boy Scout leader.
After retiring from the Air Force, Mort worked for a management consulting firm and then joined the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association in Washington, D.C. where he was a manager in its information technology department. Simultaneously, he was a dedicated educator who earned a doctorate in education from The Catholic University of America. Mort taught IT systems development as an adjunct professor at George Washington University, University of Maryland, and Marymount University. He was also a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an educational honor society.
Mort had many diverse hobbies and passions. As an amateur genealogist, he discovered 22 first cousins; he also served as president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento for eight years. He was an active member of the Sacramento Suburban Writer's Club and published nine novels and four short story collections. He loved traveling and visited more than 60 countries. As a member of the Society of American Magicians and International Brotherhood of Magicians for 40+ years, Mort enjoyed showing off his magic talents and performing for family gatherings.
Mort's family and friends will always remember his kindness, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor. Even in his final days, he made jokes and comments that brought smiles and laughter to those around him. Mort was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers or Koden, donations in Mort's memory would be appreciated to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, UT 84741-5000, Attn: Juli Staley; or online at https://bestfriends.org/donate/memory, where he and Susan have been long-time supporters and volunteers.

Mort was a mensch among menschen, a humble man of great accomplishment who gave much to his friends, family, and community. May we strive to emulate his example, to try to fill even a small part of the hole his passing leaves.

Mort was so welcoming to all and an engaging conversationalist. I enjoyed his sense of humor. He was a treasure to know, an inspiration to so many. He was a great leader.

Mort was my special friend/family, along with Susan, here in Sacramento. We all shared wonderful, warm times together, first as neighbors, then as friends, continuing to a close "family" relationship. I was so fortunate to spend time with him on several occasions near the end. He was alert, filled with humor, and the same old Mort in spirit, even as his body was not functioning well. Words can't express the huge loss I, and others, feel, now that we can't be physically together. Mort lives on in our memories, always with us in spirit. And in Susan, and his boys, their wives, and children. I love you, dear Mort. 10/28 was and is a special day!

Mort was such a cool guy. Always smiling and laughing, never without another great story to share. He left the world a better place, which is what we should all strive to achieve.

Gonna miss you, Dad - your smile, words of wisdom and guidance, your support, your hugs, all of the opportunities you provided, the example you set to serve others and what it means to have "a life well lived." And always your love. Michael
