Morton Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lord Funeral Home - Wolfeboro on Feb. 10, 2026.
Morton Smith, Jr. of Wolfeboro, NH passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, attended by several members of his loving family, and just shy of his 99th birthday. Mr. Smith is survived by his devoted wife of 75 years, Nancy Alice Frost Smith.

Mort, as he was known, was born on February 10, 1927 in Brookline, MA. The thing he cherished most in his life was his extended family, including the son and two daughters he and Nancy raised, and the seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren who called him Apa, and all miss his dearly.

Mort was a United States Army Veteran and served in the Occupation Forces in Japan after World War II. He subsequently worked as an actuary and was a Vice President at the Home Life Insurance Company in New York City. He commuted from his home in Plainfield, New Jersey for many years. He retired at age 60, freeing up time to enjoy the winter months in the warmer climates of Florida and Arizona and to begin traveling several times a year. He and Nancy visited many countries around the world, and enjoyed traveling occasionally with family members as well. They relocated to New Hampshire in the 1990's, and were among the original members of the Sugar Hill Community; they also enjoyed their time spend at their lake home in Melvin Village.

Mort loved baseball and football, especially the Red Sox and Patriots, his alma mater, Dartmouth College, and developing friendships with people he met close to home and while traveling. He also loved reading, ice cream, other sweet treats, and a good hearty laugh.

As a young man, Mort worked as a food vendor at Fenway Park, an experience he was still happy to reminisce about at age 98. He took pride in the educational attainments of all of his family members, but was especially happy to have two fellow Dartmouth alumni in his son and a grandson. Mort was able to strike up a conversation with anyone, finding common ground in celebrating families, food, travel, or just about anything.

Mort was a congregant at the Melvin Village Community Church. He was a church board member for many years, and actively involved in the church's fundraising events.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, Mr. Smith is survived by his son, David (Randy) Smith and his wife Ann, his daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) and her husband John, and his daughter Cynthia (Cyndy) and her husband Henry. His grandchildren and their spouses are Jay and Ashley, Tim and Janice, Caitlin and Jason, Brett and Caroline, Glenn and Marisa, Keely, and Lynn. The great grandchildren are Evan and Reid, Amelia and Eva, Lily, and Devon and Connor.

For several years before his passing, Morton Smith was cared for by a dedicated group of attendants as he and Nancy navigated some ups and downs with their health. He and the family appreciate everything they did to make his life comfortable and happy.

Mort will be forever in the hearts of all who knew him. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Melvin Village Community Church.

Memorial Services will be arranged for a future date.
