Mr. Lonnie Alvin Holmes, Sr., age 82, of Thomaston, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mr. Holmes will be held Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Barrow officiating. Interment will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour.
Mr. Holmes was born in Thomaston on July 23, 1942, to the late Lonnie Holmes and the late Lona Holmes. He was a 1960 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute, and was honorably discharged from the US Navy. He retired from B. F. Goodrich Martha Mills where he was employed as head overhauler with 34 years of service. Mr. Holmes was a member of Silvertown Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, chairman of deacons, and member of the adult coed Sunday School class. He was truly a good husband father, and granddaddy who loved his family very much.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by three brothers: James (Bo) Holmes, Bobby (Sonny) Holmes, and John Wayne Holmes. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sallie Fay Thompson Holmes; a daughter, Sheri (Mark) Compton of Thomaston; a son, Al (Janet) Holmes of Thomaston; a sister, Lola (Ted) Brannon of Jonesboro, GA; 3 grandchildren: Anna Lynn Holmes of Dawsonville, GA; Alyssa Nicole Holmes of Thomaston; and Andy (Heather) Compton of Lincoln, AL; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Holmes of Woodstock, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
