Muhammad Yunus Talwani M.D., died peacefully at home with his family by his side, Thursday April 17, 2025. He was 96.
Yunus was born Sept 5, 1928, in Burma. He spoke of his home with his parents and 7 siblings fondly. "3 steps from the top and 70 steps from the bottom". He would enthusiastically reflect on the endless fruit trees, playing with friends, telling time by looking up at the stars, and the culture of living in a village. With encouragement, and perhaps gentle arm-twisting from his brother, Professor Mohammad Yusuf, Yunus would go on to attend, and graduate from King Edward Medical College. While in College, he was a member of the hockey club and tennis club. Yunus would often say that he preferred sports to studying, and was at times surprised that he achieved such an accomplishment.
Yunus arrived in Trenton NJ in 1963 to begin his residency at Saint Francis Medical Center. Describing the day he arrived at the hospital, he said he looked out the window, and saw students playing tennis. He asked to join, thus beginning friendships that would last a lifetime. He completed his residency in surgery and pathology at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas, and Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, New Jersey.
In 1971, Yunus joined the medical staff at Helene Fuld Medical Center. In 1986, he became Chairman of Pathology following the tenure of his mentor Dr. Walter Sawchak. Yunus was certified by the American Board of Pathology, was a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the College of American Pathologists. He spent his 30 year career at what is now Capital Health Regional Medical Center. During that time, Yunus served as Medical Director, Treasurer of the Medical Staff, AMA State Representative, Chairman of the Transfusion Committee, Chairman of the Breast Cancer Program, Chairman of the Credentials Committee, and served on the Tumor Board. He served as the Physician Coordinator for the Breast Cancer Network of the Fox Chase Cancer Center, and was affiliated with the Mercer County Medical Society and the New Jersey Medical Society. Yunus served on the Board of Governors, as well as The Foundation Board. He transferred to Honorary Active Staff in 1999, and then Emeritus Staff in 2001. An interesting fact about Yunus, is that in 1979 he was granted a United States Patent for inventing a Rotatable Hanging Planter Mount.
Yunus, while serious about his work, could be found on the tennis court, or the golf course. Yunus was a member of Yardley Country Club. He loved playing golf and cards with all his buddies. He always looked forward to the many golf tournaments he participated in, especially the yearly Rossi Golf Tournament. Yunus cherished all of his friends, and looked forward to lunch every Saturday at Rossi's with his dearest friend Al Rossi & Co.
In addition to his beloved wife of 56 years years, Maureen Pierson Talwani, Yunus, is survived by his two children, Jameel, of Ringoes, NJ and Anisa Anne of Yardley, PA, his granddaughter, Hope Isabella of New Hampshire, and several nieces and nephews, Tayyiba of Texas, Samia of Chicago, Jamal of Toronto, & Rashad of Washington D.C.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 10:00am - 11:00am followed by his Memorial Service 11:00am (please feel free to tell a story if you have one, we would love to hear it!) in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown Richboro Rd., (at Holland Rd.)
