ST. ALBANS-Murray Chapman, 102, died Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
He was born on April 18, 1923, in Caribou, Maine, one of 13 children of Dow and Fanny Chapman. Raised in Caribou, he worked on his family's farm until he graduated high school. Moving to Connecticut, he worked at Stanley Tool until he joined the military in 1943, serving in England during WWII as an Ordinance Handler with the 446 Bomber Group. Following the war, he returned to Caribou where he met his wife to be, Mary, and her son James. Together they moved to Connecticut where Murray had a 36-year career as a machinist at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.
After retirement Murray and Mary returned to Maine and settled in St Albans. Mary passed away in 2001 after sharing a 53-year marriage. Murray loved living in St. Albans and talked fondly about all the friends he had made there. For many years he was a daily fixture at Irving's Gas Station having coffee and chatting with the employees and customers. He enjoyed driving his brother-in-law, Joe's, antique cars in parades and spending time at the lake with his niece Roxanne and her husband Mark, along with their children Andrew and Jenn.
The family would like to thank Tiffany, Diane, Cheryl, Andrea, and the folks at Irving's for all the help they gave Murray in his later years.
He is survived by his son, James Kelley and his wife Patricia; his granddaughter, Kristen Kelley and her partner Barron and their daughter Ari; and his grandson, Michael Kelley and his wife Anna and their daughter Eva.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 152, Hartland, Maine, with Fr. Anthony Lawir officiating. Military honors will be presented for his service to our country.
