STAR LAKE -- Funeral services for Murray S. "Digger" Hawley, 74, a resident of 4246 State Rt. 3, Star Lake, NY will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Hubert's Church, with Rev. Jay Seymour presiding. Burial to follow at the Oswegatchie Cemetery. Steve passed away on Tuesday, August 27th, 2024 at his beloved cottage on Scotts Point Road, in Star Lake. He is survived by his sister Sally A. Cote, of Heuvelton, NY and his two daughters, Alissa L. and Jared G. Poore (Lisbon, NY) and Alika B. and Jordan M. LaVine (Massena, NY). He is also survived by his twin granddaughters, Alivia A. and Alayah L. LaVine and his grandson, Dwyer L. Poore. Steve was predeceased by his parents.
He was born in Gouverneur, NY on July 8th, 1950 to the late Murray R. Hawley and Dorothy M. Dwyer. He graduated from Clifton-Fine Central School, Class of 1969 and then attended SUNY Canton and Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in Syracuse, NY. Steve became a licensed Funeral Director and owned and operated the Hawley Funeral Home in Star Lake, which had previously been operated by his father, Murray. For his last 40 years, Steve proudly served many families and close friends in the Star Lake and surrounding areas.
On November 21st, 1986, he married Rhonda A. Durham. From this union, they were blessed with 2 children and created many special family memories, including yearly vacations to Old Orchard Beach, ME and spending every summer at the cottage. The marriage ended in divorce. In his free time, Steve enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, snowmobiling, and spending time with family and friends. Most of all, Steve was at peace when he was at his family cottage, boating and fishing on his lake. Music was very important to him, and he attended many concerts over the course of his life. Steve was a past President of the Star Lake Protective Association, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a brother of Zeta Alpha Phi.
Memorial donations in Steve's memory can be made to the Star Lake Fire Department. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.buckfuneralhome.com. The Buck Funeral Home is serving the family of Murray S. "Steve" Hawley.
