Myra M. Adee of Garden City, South Carolina, passed away following multiyear battle with breast cancer on Wednesday January 22, 2025 with her loving family by her side. Micki was born to MSG Myron and Viola Mackland on December 7, 1944 at the Army Dispensary in McComb, Mississippi. At the time of her birth, her father was on a troop ship, preparing to land in Southern France.
Micki was predeceased by her parents; her son, Michael Adee; daughter, Michelle Dougherty; and brother, Donald Mackland. She is survived by her husband Jim; six granddaughters, Ali, Dani, Cassie, Anne, Hailey, and Maddie; two brothers Larry and Terry and their families; son in-law, Bob Dougherty; and two great grandchildren, Noah Oliver Freeman & Evelyn Clair Freeman.
Micki was an Army Brat and proud of it. She was educated in Georgia, Florida, Germany, Arkansas and North Carolina. She was a graduate of Nurnberg American High School (1962), Appalachian State College (BS -1966) and Virginia Commonwealth University (MBA-2000).
Micki began her multi-career as a high school math teacher in North Carolina. She worked for several years as a social worker in Rockingham County, North Carolina. She moved to Virginia to attend graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University pursuing a masters in social work. Recognizing that she was going to have to support herself, she applied for a programming position at Reynolds Metals Company where she wrote programs in Cobol and Easy Coder on Honeywell computers.
It was at Reynolds that she met her husband, Jim, at an employee social. They got married four months later on October 3, 1970 and have weathered life's journey together ever since. In December, 1972, Jim accepted a transfer to a plant in Troutdale, Oregon and they moved to Giesham, Oregon in 1973 where they remained until 1988. During that time, Micki became the director of religious education at the Episcopal Cathedral of John the Baptist and worked part-time as a substitute math teacher. Her next excursion on this journey took the family sixty miles downriver on the Columbia River to the town of Longview, Washington where she opened a women's dress shop. Due to the sale and closure of the cable plant where Jim was working saw the family moving back to the Richmond, Virginia area. Shortly after the move, Micki went to work for Westvaco and assisted the company in the installation and migration of data into SAP financials. Not looking to leave Westvaco, she attended an open house at the Philip Morris Plant in Chesterfield County where Jim had gone to inquire about openings. One of the interviewers took her resume on the back of an envelope. They hired her the next day. She remained at Altria Client Services until her retirement in 2009 as a Senior Data Analyst.
With the implosion of the Episcopal Church, she started looking for a new church home. Our next-door neighbor invited us to attend St. Gabriel Catholic Church. We spoke to the pastor and his reply was "Welcome". Micki left the service in tears. After attending RCIA and sessions with the marriage tribunal, both were accepted into the Catholic Church and had their marriage con-validated. At St Gabriel's, she was active with the Praying Hands knitting group and the seniors weekly bingo.
She visited a cousin who was living in the Grand Strand area in 2013 and came home and stated "We are moving to South Carolina." Jim's reply, "OK. I have moved you across the country twice. I guess we can move south." Her reply, "Good as we are going house hunting next weekend."
She began this phase of her life. While looking for houses, they also began checking the local Catholic churches and found a new home at St. Michael's in Garden City. In 2017, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After chemo, surgery (twice), and radiation treatments, she was "clear" of cancer. In early 2021, her dermatologist noticed an "abnormal growth," on her left cheek. After testing and biopsies at MUSC, she was diagnosed as having Metastatic Breast Cancer on the left Mandible - the bone that connects the skull to the jaw bone. She went reluctantly back into chemo.
Jim found a group of singers on YouTube - "Home Free". One of their songs that they have recorded is "Thank God for this Women, Amen". Jim played it for Micki as he felt that it perfectly describes Micki and what she brought into his life. Another song that fits is "There are Angel Among Us." She was and is an Angel brought down to teach him how to live and how to love.
