Nancy Clara Combs, 80, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, after a long illness, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 28, 1943, to Fred and Eva Widmann, Nancy grew up in Waterloo, IA, as the eldest of three sisters, together with Mary and Sandy. She cherished a close-knit family, enriched by a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Nancy's journey took her to Phoenix, Arizona, where she pursued her nursing education at Good Samaritan School of Nursing. She began her professional life as a surgical nurse at Good Samaritan/Banner University Medical Center, eventually rising to become the Director of Outpatient Surgery and Breast Care Center at John C. Lincoln Hospital North Mountain. After more than 30 years in the medical field, Nancy retired, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and dedication.
In retirement, she traveled extensively with her beloved husband, Stephen Combs. Their home in Peoria, AZ, became a hub of joy and camaraderie. They hosted countless memorable gatherings and formed lifelong friendships. Nancy an avid bridge player and mentor, developed a new passion for Mahjong and delighted in weekly games. She was also a member of her community bocce ball team. Family gatherings with her children-Deborah, Cristina, Sarah, and Jeremy-brought her immense joy, as did her cherished time spent with her grandchildren: Kim, Amber, Shannon, Carson, Tyler, and Lauren. Her culinary skills and festive celebrations were renowned, filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Nancy was known for her strong will and determination, balanced by an enormous heart and deep affection for her family and friends. Her wisdom and life experiences as a nurse, administrator, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother enriched the lives of all who knew her.
She will be remembered as the heart of her home, which she shared generously with those she loved. In her final moments, Nancy displayed dignity and quiet strength, surrounded by love. She will be profoundly missed. Nancy is preceded in death by her husband Stephen Combs, her parents Fred and Eva Widmann, granddaughter Amber Wong, and sister Mary Widmann.
She is survived by her sister Sandy Widmann, daughters Deborah Porter, Cristina Christmann, Sarah Combs, and son Jeremy Combs, along with her grandchildren Kimberly Wong, Shannon and Carson Porter, Tyler, and Lauren Combs.
A celebration of life will be held at her home, where we will gather to honor a remarkable woman, mother, and friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
