Nancy Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 11, 2023.
With heavy hearts we share the unexpected passing of Nancy Ann Cook on August 5, 2023 (born Nancy Ann Horton May 24, 1937).
Nancy was predeceased by Steve, her first love, lifelong friend, and devoted husband of 63 years (2020). She cherished her time with family and will be sadly missed by her daughter Rae (Ben) and their children Westin (Jackie), Patrick (Christa), Ryan (Natalie), Leah, Mark (Mariah) and grandchildren; son Glen (Holly) and his son Gentry (Taylor) and children Harlee, Belle and Andy, and Holly's daughters Kaia and Brynn; and daughter Leslie (Kevin) and their children Geoff (Lida) and Stephanie (Scott) and their son Reggie.
Nancy will be missed by her numerous nieces, nephews, special nephew Hunter (Arlene), cousins, brother John, friends and Betsy, her loyal Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She was predeceased by her parents Halley and Harriett Horton.
Nancy grew up in Yarmouth and was fortunate to meet Steve when she was seventeen. They were inseparable as they pursued most activities together. They raised their family in Central Chebogue and eventually moved to Mink Lake. Nancy spent all of the summers of her 86 years at Mink Lake, first at her parents' place and later, the past fifty-six years, at Steve and Nancy's cottage, then their home. They welcomed and hosted family and friends with great pleasure over the decades.
When her three children were young, Nancy worked part-time as a nurse. As her children started their respective careers, she began volunteering within the community. She spent many years with Welcome Wagon and then focused her endless energy on the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program, where, together with Bobi and Piper (Bernese Mountain dogs), she brought countless smiles to patients at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Nancy was a Mary Kay consultant and took great pride in serving her customers.
Nancy held dear her time with family and special friends on The Hill at Mink Lake. It is here that she expressed her caring demeanour, limitless energy, passion for nature, and imparted strong values and morals to her children, grandchildren, and, this summer, to her great-grandchildren. It was Nancy's wish for her family to enjoy the beautiful property nestled in nature on the lake and all it offers for years to come.
A private family service has been held according to family wishes. Nancy, as did Steve, donated her body to the Human Body Donation Program at Dalhousie University Medical School for the furtherance of Medical Science. A celebration of Nancy's life will take place at Mink Lake with family and friends in the summer of 2024.
In memory of Nancy, please consider making a donation to St. John Ambulance Nova Scotia Council.
