Obituary of Nancy Derderian
Nancy Marie (Sloat) Derderian, 84, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023, at her home in Iowa City, Iowa.
Nancy was born in Sterling, IL on January 14, 1939, to Rolla and Irene (Jaquet) Sloat. She grew up in Rock Falls, IL with her sister Delores (Gierhart) and brothers Darhal and Robert, and graduated from Rock Falls High School. She married John S. Derderian in 1968 and with him had three sons: Joseph, James, and Jeremy.
For much of her life, Nancy worked variously and simultaneously as a chef, nanny, domestic, disciplinarian, nurse – that is to say, she was a homemaker and raised her children, with no time off. After her children were grown, she had more time for her own interests, which included gardening, reading, sewing, cooking and baking, and keeping up correspondences with a large number of old friends and relatives.
Nancy was kind, gentle, calm, generous, thoughtful, giving, patient, and extremely slow to anger. All who met her remarked on what a sweet woman she was. She will be missed.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, and her brother, Darhal. She is survived by her brother, Robert, and her three sons.
In accordance with Nancy's wishes, there will be no services, but donations may be made in her memory to Iowa City Hospice, which provided immeasurable care and compassion to her and her family in her final days.
