Nancy Moore Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from May 24 to May 25, 2011.
MOORE, Nancy Harrison Delano, died May 23, 2011, at home after a long illness. A native of Oldhams in Westmoreland County, she graduated from Cople High School, and received a Bachelor's degree from Westhampton College, and a Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Nancy was an accomplished woman, particularly as an educator and author. She taught literature and writing in Albemarle County and the Richmond area for a number of years. In the mid-1980s she created a central Virginia young students program for The Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth, serving 3rd to 6th grade students studying mathematics and writing. The program ran for a decade and its curricula were models for other programs. Nancy also served as Coordinator of Virginia's Governor's Schools, and in 1988, developed the Virginia Governor's School for Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. Nancy's Living Every Minute chronicled her mother's life in Virginia's rural Northern Neck, including her long struggle with, and ultimate death from, dementia. Her illustrated children's book, Kiernan's Jam, won a Bronze Medal in the 2007 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards. In addition, Nancy co-authored a very successful instructional book for Scholastic Press, for those teaching middle school writing. She authored numerous articles in scholarly and historical journals. In addition, Nancy was instrumental in the creation of a number of Richmond area programs including the Women's Resource Center, Commonwealth Parenting Center, and Mother's Morning Out at First Presbyterian Church. She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church of Oldhams and served for many years as chair of the Cemetery Committee. Nancy is survived by her husband of 46 years, Hullihen Williams Moore; daughter, Sara Delano Moore and partner, William Bintz; son, Frank Hullihen Moore and wife, Amy Leftwich Moore; grandchildren, Iain Thorn Moore, Frank McKiernan Ziletti and David Austin Ziletti; sister, Sara Delano Kelly; brother, Frank Pelham Delano and wife, Patricia Hein; and many nieces and nephews. Nancy's parents, Pauline Agnes Efford Delano and Francis Gawen Delano predeceased her. The family will receive friends at home, 502 Welwyn Rd., Richmond, on May 25, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ingledew, 4543 Oldhams Road, Oldhams, Va., on May 26, 2011. A service will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 144 Ebenezer Church Rd., Oldhams, Va., at 11 a.m. on May 27, 2011, with interment following in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Nancy Delano Moore Scholarship Fund at the Center for Talented Youth, The Johns Hopkins University, 5801 Smith Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21209.

Sara and Frank, I want you to know that my thoughts are with you today. I have so many memories of your lovely sister and know she will be sorely missed. My memories of you two, her, and your mom are some of the fondest of my growing up in the Northern Neck. Of course, your mom was a wonderful teacher whom I adored, and she has been a role model for me in my teaching career. I know you are so proud of Nancy and all of her accomplishments--a life truly well lived. My heart-felt sympathy to you and all of her family.

I am so saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. As one of her many cousins, we didn't see each other often, but our last conversation a few Christmases ago was a sweet one. I cherish her book "Living Every Minute" she wrote about her mother Pauline and Nancy truly lived every minute too. My prayers are with Hullie and their family.
Love,

I remember Nancy from our high school days - her mother, Pauline was a inspiration to me in the days before I went to college at Virginia Tech and on to the U. S. Navy. Nancy had a splendid career and Pauline would be so proud of her accomplishments. Sincerely, Jim Day

"Hully" - Nancy taught me English at Hermitage High School - I'm in the Class of '66. She was a wonderful instructor. You don't remember me but Winnie Williams & her husband were good friends of my grandparents thru the connection of Pine Street Baptist Church years and years ago. Winnie bragged on her nephew, you, and knew you would do well in life. I think I remember them talking about you being employed with the State Corporation Commission(?), if my memory serves me correctly. You must be retired by now. My sincere sympathy to you and your family in the loss of Nancy.
