The staff of Heishman Funeral Home/Valley Funeral Service sends condolences to the family of Ms. Nancy Lee Thayer. Nancy Lee Saunders Thayer, 88, of Mt. Jackson, formerly of Annandale, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at Shenandoah Place in New Market. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Funeral Service in Edinburg. Pastor Buzz Menhardt will officiate. Burial will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Upperville, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Thayer was born August 14, 1937, in Takoma Park, MD, daughter of the late Walter Elbert Saunders and Margaret Thelma Tavenner Saunders. She graduated in 1960 from Washington Missionary College with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and was employed for almost 30 years at the Shenandoah County Health Department. She was a member of the New Market Seventh Day Adventist Church. She is survived by three sons, Robert Thayer of Harrisonburg, Thomas E. Thayer and wife Lisa of Gore, and Andrew E. Thayer and wife Jen of Winchester; brother, Walter V. Saunders of Stephens City and granddaughter, Carmen Thayer of Winchester. Pallbearers will be Robert, Thomas, and Andrew Thayer and Bobby, Ronnie and Brian Saunders. Honorary pallbearer will be Mark Johnson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg, VA 22824 or a Hospice of your choice.
