Nathan Allen Poisel, 47, of Coralville, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on July 16, 2025, of complications from a sudden cardiac arrest.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, August 24, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM at Melrose Meadow, 350 Dublin Drive,
Iowa City, Iowa 52246. Graveside Services were held Monday, August 4, 2025 at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City Visitation was from 1 PM to 1:45 PM, on August 4, 2025.
Nathan was born September 12, 1977, in Mt Pleasant, Iowa. He attended schools in Cedar Rapids through his sophomore year at Jefferson High School and went on to graduate from Lone Tree Community High School in 1995. He attended Kirkwood Community College.
Nathan held a variety of jobs over the years and especially enjoyed the sports-related positions. As a teenager, he was employed by the Cedar Rapids Reds as a scoreboard operator. He later worked as a scorekeeper for junior high sports in Iowa City. More recently, Nathan was thrilled to be a groundskeeper and work concessions at Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye arena for University of Iowa football and basketball games.
Nathan enjoyed billiards, disc golfing, and spades. He was a gifted writer, avid Pokemon Go player, and Fantasy Football champion. Nathan was a diehard fan of the Atlanta Braves, the Dallas Cowboys, and everything Iowa Hawkeyes. He raved about the talent of Caitlin Clark long before she was a household name.
Over the last few years, Nathan became a fan of podcasts such as Mr. Ballen and Fraudsters. He watched every episode of Psych and Scrubs and loved anything true crime. He enjoyed traveling through the years throughout the United States, most recently with family to New York City.
He never met a dog or a cat that he didn't like. He was especially close to his dog, Libra, and forever grateful to Critter Crusaders for their assistance in caring for Libra in her later years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Critter Crusaders.
Nathan is survived by his mother, Laura Poisel; his father and stepmother, Joe and Diane Poisel; siblings Aaron Poisel, Sarah Poisel, Emily (Adam) Underwood, Natalie (David) Vahle, and Jimiya (David) Smith; nieces Jordan Poisel, Azaria Smith, Athena Smith, and Avery Underwood; nephews Elias Leeney, Mason Underwood, Hayden Cline, and Oliver Vahle; lifelong friend Eric Hoelzen; and two very good boys, his dachshund Luka and his chihuahua Mad-Eye.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers; uncle, Larry; uncle, Phil; nephew, Brandon Kantaphone-Poisel; his niece, Olivia Lou Vahle; close friend, Alan Goldstein; and his beloved toy poodle, Libra.
