Nathaniel "Nate" Marshall Smith, age 18, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 17, 2025. He was born on June 29, 2007, in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Benjamin Smith and Tracie Lazarus.
Nate was a bright, gentle soul whose passions and talents made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He had an extraordinary gift for music and could play guitar by ear-something that brought him joy and allowed him to express himself deeply. He especially loved the rock band Pantera, and their music filled many of his happiest moments.
A collector at heart, Nate loved figurines from his favorite horror movies-Mike Myers, Predator, and others lined his shelves with pride. He was an avid fan of Lions football and rarely missed watching a game on Sunday nights. He also enjoyed WWE, especially John Cena, and loved the Peacemaker TV show. Nate had a keen interest in history, particularly the Vietnam War, and could talk at length about the people and events that shaped that era.
He was a talented cook who made what many would argue was the best steak. Nate was also a devoted Star Wars fan and collector, and he had a deep love for the old west, often immersing himself in the world of Red Dead Redemption.
Above all else, Nate loved his family with his whole heart. He loved big. He cherished his friendships and affectionately referred to his friends as his "buddies." He shared a special bond with his beloved cat, Arthur, his loyal companion and best friend. Nate was funny, generous, and incredibly kind. He had a nickname for everyone and a comforting presence that made people feel seen and supported. If someone needed help, Nate was there without hesitation. His giving spirit and warm heart will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Nate is preceded in death by his grandparents, Dale Richards, Patricia Davidson, and Terry Smith; his aunt, Angela Moorian; and his uncles, Jon Jameson and Jesse Goudy.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents; his stepfather, Richard Wescott II; grandparents, Judith Hill, Dave and Alice Moorian, and Al and Nancy Lazarus; siblings, Najee (Warren Hockett) Lazarus, Elle (Nathan Rillema) Smith, Kennedi Wescott, Logan Smith, Lucas Smith, Liam Smith, and Harper Smith; aunts and uncles, Jeff and Erin Smith, Cheryl Davis, Andrew Smith, Christina and Jimmy Gates, Arica Lazarus, Toni Moorian, and Jason (Lisa) Campbell; cousins, Bryce Smith, Peyton Smith, Alyssa Smith, Brady Smith, Grace Smith, Madi Smith; his niece, Amara Lazarus, and nephew, Carmello Hockett; along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly. He referred to his friends and family as his tribe.
Nate's life, though far too short, was filled with love, laughter, creativity, and connection. He will be forever missed and forever remembered.
In accordance with the family's wishes public services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 22, 2025, with a time for visiting beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 noon with Rev. Jim Dyke officiating. Nate will be laid to rest with his grandfather: Dale Richards at Vicksburg Cemetery following the service. Following the graveside committal a time of food and fellowship will be provided at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 8845 S Sprinkle Rd, Portage, MI 49002, at 2:00 p.m.
