Nazarita "Tita" Gilberta Roybal Lewis
Born January 30, 1933, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Nazarita "Tita" Gilberta Roybal Lewis peacefully passed away in her sleep on November 2, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tita was a devoted wife, mother, and educator whose warmth touched many lives.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Fred A. Lewis, and her siblings, Amado Roybal, Jr. and Patricia Lopez. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frederick "Fred" R. Lewis, her sister Josephine Roybal, and her parents, Estella and Amado Roybal.
Following her graduation from Penasco High School in 1951, Tita attended the University of New Mexico, and earned her Bachelor's degree in Education. She dedicated nearly forty years to teaching elementary school children, inspiring generations with her patience, creativity, and genuine care. She cherished the many hand-made notes given to her each year by her students, and kept them along with the year's class photo.
Tita's journey with Fred began in Albuquerque in 1958, where their love story blossomed while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Together, they built a life full of travel and new experiences, living in places as far-flung as Germany, where their son was born, and across the United States. No matter where she lived, Tita created a welcoming home filled with laughter, delicious food, and the warmth of family traditions.
After retiring from teaching in 1995, Tita enjoyed spending time with her family and occasionally visiting the casino, where she loved playing penny slots.
Services to honor Tita's life will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Albuquerque. A Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Memories and condolences can be left on the obituary at the funeral home website.
