Neal William Chalkley passed away peacefully at home on December 8, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, leadership, and generosity that touched the lives of many. Throughout his life, Neal was known for his ability to fix anything, his passion for food, and his unwavering commitment to his community and family.
Neal's career spanned several decades and industries. He worked with notable organizations including Marriott Corporation, AMF Bowling, and Harmony Hospitality, where he left an indelible mark with his innovative ideas and leadership. A dedicated advocate for tourism and hospitality in Williamsburg, Neal served five terms as President of the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association and held significant roles on the boards of the Greater Williamsburg Tourism Council and Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce. His visionary efforts were instrumental in the development of the Williamsburg Sports and Event Center, which is set to open in 2026. Neal was also a founding member of the Independent Restaurant Association of Williamsburg.
Born with a nearly photographic memory, Neal was largely self-taught. His daughter Ella often shared with pride, "My dad can fix anything," capturing his knack for tinkering with cars, boats, and just about any mechanical device he encountered. This skill was matched by his culinary prowess, especially evident when he opened his own restaurant, Family & Friends, in Williamsburg. Neal believed that every gathering of loved ones should be a celebration, centered around a great meal.
A generous spirit, Neal initiated community programs like the Back-to-School Supplies Drive while working at AMF Bowling and created cherished traditions like "Breakfast with Santa" at his restaurant. His events, such as fish fries and pig roasts, became community staples, featuring the music of the Smith Wade band and bringing people together for good causes. He ensured children had gifts under the tree and hearty meals to celebrate the festive season.
Neal's wisdom and kindness made him a natural teacher and leader. He took joy in sharing knowledge, empowering others, and recognizing the potential in everyone he met. His encouraging nature and open-mindedness inspired those around him to contribute their ideas and opinions freely.
Survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Theresa Anne, Neal leaves behind sons Jonathan William, Adam Lee, Hunter James, and Justin Michael; and his daughter, Ella Virginia Anne. His siblings, Linda Hinnant, Constance Forbes, Terry Williams, Thomas, and John Chalkley, along with grandchildren James, Alexander, and George, will continue to cherish his memory. Neal was predeceased by his parents, Leslie Lee and Eileen Jane.
Neal was surrounded by friends throughout his life. An old friend, Dave Haack, often said, "We have the technology," referring to the creativity and innovation they brought to solving problems together. The adventures and possibilities they explored were boundless and inspiring.
Neal was not only a talented handyman but also a devoted father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle and best friend. His vibrant presence ensured there was never a dull moment, and his legacy as "Neal the Wheel" will undoubtedly keep rolling on.
In honor of Neal and his beloved shop dog Mr. Biggie Biggs-and other furry family members Nugget, Maci, Betsy, Buddy, and Scout-contributions can be made to the Heritage Humane Society. Neal's life was a testament to the values of family, friendship, and community, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held on January 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, 520 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
