Ned Wellmeier Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery on Jan. 22, 2025.
Ned Ernest Wellmeier, known affectionately as Ned to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at the age of 92, in his hometown of Evansville, IN. Born on April 23, 1932, to the late Samuel and Viola Wellmeier, Ned lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
Ned was a proud Marine, serving his country with honor and distinction. His commitment to service continued long after his military days were over, as he became an active member of the Shriner organization, where he found great joy in contributing to charitable causes. For over 30 years, Ned applied his craftsmanship as a sheet metal worker, a trade that he mastered with precision and pride. He was also a faithful member of St. John UCC Boonville church, where he found spiritual solace and fellowship.
Family was the cornerstone of Ned's life. He was a loving husband to his late wife of 25 years, Mary Rose Wellmeier, and together they raised a family that grew to include children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter to his children: Debbie Young (Dave Nash), Ned A. Wellmeier, Kevin (Kathy) Wellmeier, Joe (Sally) Brooks, Tonya (Darryl) Boarman, Jeff (April) Brooks, and Penny Johnson. Ned was a cherished grandfather to 19 grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to 40 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Ned's passion for life extended to his hobbies and interests. He was an avid chicken raiser, taking delight in the daily care of his flock. His cat Callie was a constant companion, often found purring contentedly at his side. Ned's love for Double Colas was well-known among his family and friends, and he could often be found enjoying a cold one while regaling stories to his grandchildren.
As a member of the Legion of Honor and Color Guard and faithful driver and builder of the calliope, Ned demonstrated his unwavering patriotism and respect for his fellow servicemen and women. His presence at parades and ceremonies was a testament to his dedication and love for his country.
Ned was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Rose, his parents, Samuel and Viola Wellmeier, and his siblings Sam Wellmeier, Betty Godman, Jean Schlachter, Jack Wellmeier, Charlotte Kerwick, Dale Wellmeier, and Jerry Wellmeier. He leaves behind a family that will forever cherish his memory, a community that will miss his steadfast presence, and a legacy of service that will continue to inspire.
Ned's life was a tapestry of commitment, love, and joy. His laughter, wisdom, and kind spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to Ned Ernest Wellmeier, we celebrate a life well-lived, a family well-loved, and a man who made the world a better place by simply being in it. Ned's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, his friends, and all the lives he touched.
