Nellie Mae Wilcher Short

Nellie Mae Wilcher Short, 88, of Griffin, widow of Gerald Donald Short, died Thursday, February 26, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Tennille, GA, October 9, 1937, she was a daughter of the late John Grady Wilcher and Sara Dessie Cooper Wilcher. Mrs. Short worked with American Mills for over twenty-five years and later worked at Fort Gilliem in administration. She retired from Big Lots where she routinely bought more than her weekly paycheck. She loved volunteering for the Wellstar Spalding Hospital Auxiliary and did until her health declined. She enjoyed attending her widow's group monthly and seeing many friends.

Mrs. Short was a member of Rock Springs Church, where she was a member of the Thrive Senior Group. She was very active in numerous church activities including Tuesday Night Bible Class.

In addition to her parents and husband of twenty-eight years, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Wilcher; and sisters, June Evans, Louise Powell and Edna Hays.

Survivors include her four daughters, Gina Davies and husband Gene of Forsyth, Sandy Hooks and Patrick Werho of Fayetteville, Debbie Tolen and husband Marty of Griffin and Charla Ellison of Milner; grandchildren, Misty Long and husband John of Cumming, Josh Hooks of Stockbridge, Natalie Miller and husband Josh of Griffin, Dustin Davies and wife Kristy of Gainesville, Jessica Summers and husband Stephen of Concord, Jacob Hooks and wife Jessica of Forsyth and Chase Ellison and wife Morgan of Griffin; seventeen great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Adkinson and husband Rudet of Auburn, AL and Peggy Glass and husband Sonny of Griffin; special niece who was like a sister, Sue Garrett and husband Herb of Cumming; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Nellie Mae Wilcher Short will be conducted Monday, March 2, 2026, at 3:00 PM from the Chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Darryl Woodruff officiating. Burial will follow in Westwood Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the service hour at the funeral home on Monday.
