Nettie Ortence Barnett, 95, of
Marion, Indiana, transitioned to be with the Lord peacefully at 1:27 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, in her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on December 7, 1929, in Marion to the late Henry and Edith (Pettiford) Cobb. Nettie was raised by her Papa and siblings after her mother passed away just seven days after giving birth to Nettie. Nettie was a wonderful example of a great mother despite growing up and never knowing her own mother.
Nettie was united in marriage to Otha Lee Barnett in 1955, with whom she shared a life of love, faith, and family. She received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior under the leadership of Rev. William Perkins at the House of Worship. Nettie worked diligently on the production line at Gen Corp until her retirement and was a proud member of Gen Corp Retirees Local 466. Shortly after retiring, Nettie became instrumental in caring for her granddaughter, Nicole, after she was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor Cancer. Nettie would travel tirelessly to and from Riley Children's Hospital supporting Nicole through her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Later, Nettie became a part-time receptionist at her daughter's salon. Nettie also loved attending the baseball games of her grandchildren, of which she was the team's "cheerleader"!
As a devoted member of Fountain of Life Worship Center, Nettie's life was a testament to her unwavering faith. She loved the Lord deeply and expressed that love through sharing the Word and serving in her church community. Whether she was playing gospel music, cooking for church events, or simply offering a helping hand, Nettie's joy came from giving to others. She was known for her warm heart, her love for Bingo, and her many "adopted" children who found comfort in her presence.
Nettie loved the Lord, her family, her church family, and the lonely/left out/forgotten. Nettie would answer her home phone stating, "Praise the Lord!" She will be remembered for the following sayings, "I'm telling you like it T. I. -IS (TIS)", "Dot every I and cross every T", and "You gotta love them anyway!"
Nettie is survived by her children: Colett (Willie) McCain, Adrian Lee (Crystal) Barnett, and Veta (Cleo Jr.) Johnson, all of Marion; grandchildren: Edward Barnett, Nicole Johnson, Vince Barnett Jr., Adrian (Victoria) Chatmon, Kyle Johnson, Dexter Barnett, Chelsea Chatmon, Andrew Chatmon, Da'lyana Barnett, DeNiro Barnett, Roland Barnett, Jada Barnett, and Chloe Barnett; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends, including Mrs. Jean Olds, who will cherish her memory.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Otha Lee Barnett; son, Vince Edward Barnett; parents; brothers, Coy (Joann) Cobb and Calvin (Mary) Cobb; and sisters, Ruth Ann Barlowe, Ammie Marjorie (Edgar) Stewart, and Elizabeth (Ezra) Morrell.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Nettie's life on Friday, August 8, 2025, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1204 W. 14th St.,
Marion, IN. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm followed by a homegoing service at 1:00 pm. Bishop Charles Glenn will be officiating with burial taking place at Grant Memorial Park.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave.,
