Newton Derryberry Jr.

Newton Dowling Derryberry, Jr., age 77, of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, July 17th, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd, beginning with visitation at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at Morning Glory Farm, 3321 Maxey Road, Cedar Hill, Tennessee. Please dress casually for a hot day. A light lunch will follow for those who would like to stay and visit longer. Following the service the graveside burial will take place in Jackson Fort Cemetery on the farm with Taylor Madison, Brown Gaither, Adam McCreary, Tim Garrison, Todd Garrison, Joey Garrison, Barry Pickering, and John Grigsby serving as pallbearers. Newton grew up in Old Hickory and graduated from DuPont High School in 1966. He attended David Lipscomb University and was a graduate of Falls Business College and Owens Business School at Vanderbilt. He began working at J.C. Bradford and Company in 1967. He became a Senior Municipal Bond Trader and a registered representative of the New York Stock Exchange while there. In 1980 he was named a Vice President and in 1984 he became a partner. After the company was sold, he served as a Vice President of Paine Webber and then as a Vice President of the United Bank of Switzerland. He was respected and dearly loved by all of his colleagues. They thought of him as "The CORNERSTONE of the retail bond department." He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ who found a peaceful closeness to God through the beauty and order of His natural world. Morning Glory Farm was his favorite place to be except when the mountains were calling. He was curious about everything. He loved traveling, gardening, woodworking, flying RC airplanes, but the hobby he was most enthusiastic about was his love of automobiles. Working in his garage restoring another jewel of an antique or vintage automobile was by far the most enjoyable of all his hobbies. In 2011, he and his wife Leah, called Sweet Pea by him, married and began an adventure that brought both of them endless joy and happiness. That happiness spilled over to all their friends and families and the enjoyment that came with spending time with them. Not only did he love his wife, children, and grandchildren passionately, but also his nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and his precious mother, and sisters who preceded him in death. In addition to his wife Leah Holland Derryberry, he is survived by his children, Newton Derryberry III., Chantal Grubbs, Staci (& Josh) McCreary, Allyson (& Mark) Gaither, and Holly (& Brad) King; grandchildren, Ashleigh Grubbs, November Grubbs, Adam McCreary, Cate McCreary, Lizy McCreary, Brown Gaither, Ellie Gaither, Scout Wood, Andrew Teague, and Braden King. Additional survivors include nieces and nephews, Camille Pickering, Joey Garrison, Tim Garrison, Todd Garrison, Tina Brown, Rina Sutphin, Stacey Madison and many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Newton Dowling Derryberry, Sr.; mother, Ruby Carpenter Derryberry; sisters, Pearl Smith, Lyndal Burch, and Gayle Garrison.
