Gerald Derryberry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Yarber Mortuary - Mountain View Chapel on Feb. 17, 2026.
Gerald Wayne Derryberry was born May 20, 1941, in Bono, Arkansas, to Henry Melvin and Lurah Belle (Sykes) Derryberry. He departed this life on February 15, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Gerald's family moved from Arkansas to Hartshorn, Missouri, when he was a young boy. They later moved to Summersville, where he graduated from high school in 1960. In 1961, he married Dorita Kay Johnson, and to this union, three children were born. Two sons, Darrell (Ruthetta) and Kevin (Linda) Derryberry, and one daughter, Alisa (Mark) Wood.

Gerald was not afraid of hard work. Growing up, his family worked as iterant farm workers during the summer and fall, and they would travel to other states to pick cotton and fruit. Once he was married, Gerald went to work for Smith Flooring in Mountain View. In 1965, they moved to Kansas City, where he managed service stations. In 1981, he relocated to Montier, Missouri, to manage Searcy's Station & Grocery. Later, he worked for Craig Charcoal in Mountain View and Royal Oak Charcoal in Summersville. He finished up his working career at KMJ Pallet Mill in Birch Tree, Missouri.

Gerald attended the Church of God of Prophecy most of his life. He was a member of congregations at Summersville, Summit St. in Kansas City, Missouri, and for the last 45 years at Montier, where he served stints as Sunday School Superintendent and Church Treasurer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Viola Derryberry and Eunice Ling, one brother, Leon Derryberry, and one grandson, Tim Derryberry.

Survivors include his wife, Dorita Kay of Montier, MO; sons, Darrell (Ruthetta) of Winona, MO, and Kevin (Linda) of Montier, MO; daughter, Alisa (Mark) Wood of Waterloo, IL; sister, Leola Baine of Holland, MI; brother, Everett Derryberry of Kansas City, MO; five grandsons, Jacob, Matthew, James "Rusty", Jonas, and Josh Derryberry; one granddaughter, Regan Wood; four great-grandchildren, Alison, Lincoln, Bruce, and Benjamin; and last, but not least, he had many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Gerald loved to go fishing and camping. He was one of the nicest guys you ever met, although he did have a reputation for being a little ornery. Orneriness was his love language. His way of showing that he loved you was by playfully picking on you. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Yarber Mortuary, Mountain View, Missouri, with Pastor Tom Wiggs officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, also at the funeral home. Interment will be in Montier Cemetery, Montier, Missouri. Condolences may be expressed at www.yarbermortuary.com.
