Nini Sarmiento passed away peacefully at Gilchrist Hospice surrounded by family and heart friends. Nini was a graduate of Oxon Hill High School, Loyola College in Maryland, and the University of Baltimore Publications Design Program. A graphic designer by training and co-founder of Home Anthology, her true vocation in life was to bring beauty, kindness and love to all she encountered.
Predeceased by her mother Elena Sarmiento and survived by her father Sam Sarmiento, her husband of 30 years Robert Degenhard, sibling La Sarmiento and spouse Wendy Taylor, sister-in-law Mary Beth Brandenburg and husband Jeff, brother-in-law Joe Degenhard and wife Leigh, brother-in-law Will Degenhard and wife Annie, and her cherished heart friends.
Nini was a devoted and beloved Tita to her nieces Grace, Maeve, Tess, and Cecilia and nephews Owen, Quinn, Simeon, and Henry. And a dedicated daughter-in-law to the late Richard and Helen Degenhard.
Nini and Rob's beautiful love story began sledding on a snowy hill at Loyola 37 years ago. They created a life together infused with limitless joy, endless laughter, incredible strength, ingenious creativity, steely fortitude, and undying love.
Nini was a thrifting fashionista, interior decorator, amateur choreographer extraordinaire, and voracious reader of books and restaurant menus. Her creativity and acts of service knew no bounds. She was known for her sweet but strong voice, bright eyes, beautiful smile as well as her unwavering and persevering kindness, consideration, thoughtfulness, and generosity regardless of life's challenges. Her light will be missed by all who knew her.
Friends may call at the family owned Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Rd. (beltway exit 26), on Saturday, November 23rd and Sunday, November 24th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Memorial Service and Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations offered in memory of Nini can be made to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in honor of her tenacious and compassionate oncologist, Dr. Dana Roque. Checks, with notation IMO Nini Sarmiento, can be made payable to UMBF, Inc. and sent to the University of Maryland School of Medicine Development Office to the attention of Traci Morgan 31 South Greene Street, 3rd Floor Baltimore, MD 21201.
