Noel J. Greenhalgh, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Salem, Idaho, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. He was born January 5, 1939, to Floyd and Mary Hill Greenhalgh.
Noel learned at a young age the value of hard work and the outdoors. He spent his childhood riding his bike around town with his brother Wendell, especially enjoying their trips to Matthews Grocery.
In 1949, the family moved to Chester, where Noel welcomed his twin sisters – affectionately known as the “Snow Plane Twins.”
Chester quickly became a place he cherished. Noel grew into a hardworking and talented young man. He played church baseball and basketball, serving as catch on a team that earned an invitation to the All Church Tournament in Salt Lake City in 1956.
In high school, he continued playing basketball and became an active member of the FFA, where he served as an officer and attended the state convention in Boise – an experience he treasured.
While living in Chester, Noel met the love of his life, a hometown girl, Jean Hathaway. They were married in August of 1958 and built a beautiful life together. They worked in Yellowstone National Park for many years alongside Jean’s father, Floyd Hathaway.
Noel later farmed and worked in construction. Noel’s skill as a master carpenter and builder was admired by many. He created countless keepsakes that remain treasured by his family.
In 1989, Noel and Jean moved to Salem, where their family continued to grow. Noel’s greatest joy in life was his family. He and jean were blessed with 5 children, 22 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren. His example of hard work, kindness and patience will continue to guide them.
Noel is survived by his children, Ryan (Cora) Greenhalgh, Annette (Tim) Miller, Todd (Corie) Greenhalgh, Audra (Glade) Mason, and Chris (Karen) Greenhalgh, his brother, Wendell Greenhalgh and a sister, Arva (Dennis) Jorgenson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean, his parents, a sister, Marva Greenhalgh, and his sister-in-law Sylvia Greenhalgh.
A viewing will be held at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, Idaho, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 10:00 - 10:45 am. After the viewing a private family service will be held. Interment will follow at the Chester Cemetery.
Noel leaves behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
