Nokama Smith Obituary

Nokama Jean Smith was born October 18, 1949, to the late Douglas Smith and Mildred Hairston. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Patrica Peay (Wiston Salem, NC) and Delores Torres (Piscataway, NJ).

She attended Albert Harris High School in Martinsville, VA and was a graduate of NC A&T where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was an accountant executive for the International Monetary Fund (Washington, DC) and retired from there.

Nokama had one daughter Jessel Jackson (Fayetteville, NC) who blessed her with three grandchildren: Aiden Jackson-Holland, Arynn Jackson and Alijah Jackson- Somerville.

Nokama was affectionally known as Nikki to many of her colleagues and close friends and Jeannie to family members. However, you address her she usually had some quick-witted response. She enjoyed playing spades, listening to music, dancing and traveling.

Those left to cherish her memory includes four sisters, Charlene Manns (Fayetteville, NC) Yonnie Glover, Kathy McCoy and Trudy Mitchell all of Winston Salem, NC.

My sincere condolences to Polly and her family and Jessel and her children on Nickie's passing. Nokama and I attended A&T and graduated in June 1971. We continued our friendship as residents of the DC area for several years and after I returned to my roots in Boston, Massachusetts, it didn't end there. We visited one another and even travelled to Paris, a once in a lifetime dream and then travel to Germany to visit Polly and her husband. We continued to travel as she, Trevia and I would connect every December before Christmas in New York with a finale dinner with her sister Dee in New Jersey. Later, I would travel with Jessel to Paris, and Nickie would join us a week later. Nickie so loved her daughter and would move mountains to assure that she and her grandchildren were okay. As I watched my church service from Paris this morning, I believe that the hymn, "Come Unto Jesus," was her herald to come unto the house of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our Father gave her rest. Nickie, I will always love and miss the YOU who was Nickie. May God bless you and provide the serenity and peace that you so deserved. TTBOD. I love you, miss you, and will always admire the brilliance that made you Nokama Jean Smith. May you rest in God's loving arms. Your sister by another mother, Valeria Lowe-Barehmi.

Nokama and I graduated from high school together. We also attended NC A&T State University together and I remember seeing her on line as she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I loved her spirit and zest for life adventures.

To the family of Nokama Smith, my sincerest condolences. Nikki and I graduated from Albert Harris together. Not only were we classmates but we were friends growing up. After graduation we lost touch and I always wondered what happened to her.
She was always a good friend!

My heart is heavy hearing the news of "Smith" s passing. I attended A & T with her and we became friends. We enjoyed on many occasions playing spades , dancing and just doing things that friends do. Such good memories I have of such a beautiful person.
