Surrounded by her loving family, Nolene Hjorth Sumsion peacefully passed away October 17, 2024, at the age of 81. Nolene was born October 29, 1942, in Payson, UT, and was the eldest child of Don Carlos and Louise Hjorth. She was raised in Mapleton and often reminisced about her childhood, fondly recalling walking the flocks of sheep around the Mapleton community.
Nolene met Calvin J. Sumsion in one of her classes at Springville High School, where she graduated in 1960. They began dating and, after waiting for him to serve in the Northeast British Mission, were married June 6, 1963. Nolene loved children. She was a devoted mother to 11 of her own, while also running a daycare in her home and faithfully serving for decades as a nursery leader in her church congregations. She was a treasure trove of songs, rhymes, and patty-cakes, and an endless well of hugs, kisses, and I love yous. Nolene’s life was filled with quiet service as she demonstrated her faith and devotion to Jesus Christ.
Nolene will be greeted by loved ones that passed on before, including Calvin, her husband of 61 years; her loving parents, Carlos and Louise; and her brothers Don and Charlie. She is survived by her 11 children: Grant (Jenny), Julie, Nathan (Laurzia), Matthew (Tawni), Jason, Sarah (Sean), Rachel (Jared), Aaron (Lexia), Becca (Bryan), Anna, and James. Nolene’s 33 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren will always know Grandma loves them.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Orchard Ward Chapel located at 828 South Locust Ave., Pleasant Grove, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held Tuesday morning prior to the service from 9-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
