Nolly (Nolie) was born at Clark Air Force Base, Manila, The Philippines in 1941, 8 weeks before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She is one of 8 children, the third oldest daughter of Jesus & Agueda San Luis. Her father was a guerrilla resistance fighter, aiding the US in the fight against the Empire of Japan. Following his survival of the Bataan Death March and Concentration camp, he, like many other Filipino Freedom Fighters, was granted enlistment in the US Armed Forces and eventually awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Her family moved to Okinawa (occupied Japan), the US, and Europe for her teenage years and finally settled in Alexandria, VA, where she graduated from high school. Nolly graduated from the Georgetown registered nursing program.
In April 1966, she married Bill in Fairfax, Va. They moved to the Maryland Glade Valle,y where they lived for 51 years. She was deeply committed to the community, volunteering with the Jaycees, 4-H, Hospice, the Lions Club, Girl Scouts, and their church. Nolly also spent untold hours with participants of the ARC of Frederick County, Frederick County Parks & Recreation, and spent a week each summer for 26 years at Bishop Claggett's Special Challenge camp for developmentally disabled adults. She exemplified Ephesians 6-8, "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free."
Nolly was ushered to Heaven listening to Elvis' How Great thou Art. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William Rife, Newnan, GA; 3 daughters Kim (Allan) Steel, Middletown MD; Karen (Kevin) Comegys, Newnan GA and Stefanie (Scott) Corbitt, Brunswick Ga. In addition, she has 6 grandchildren: Haylee (Tom), Kristopher (Ashley), Hannah (Kaleb), Kearston (Beau), Holland (Tyler) & Isaac; 13 great grandchildren: Aurore, Matilda, Levi, Van, Everett, Ezra, Shea, Briggs, Byler, Kallie, Rex, Summer and Ellie. She is blessed with countless loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Newnan at Go Church and in Frederick, MD. In lieu of flowers, please consider an act of service, a donation to the ARC or a charity of your choice.
