Norman “Pogo” Dahl, 93, of Deerfield passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025 at Home Again, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Arnie and Caroline Dahl on September 5, 1932, in Deerfield Township. Pogo grew up on the family farm and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1950. He met the love of his life, Beverly Wilhelm, on April 19, 1957. They married on June 28, 1958. Together, they raised 2 fine boys, Curtis “Curt” and Eric, both of Deerfield. After retirement he also helped to care for his grandson, Norman Dahl, of Deerfield.
Pogo served with the United States Army in Korea from 1954-55, where he made lifelong friends and lasting memories. In 1967 he helped establish the Deerfield VFW post and served as Post Commander.
Pogo was a funny, hardworking man who touched the lives of many. He worked for the Deerfield Creamery, Sta-Rite Industries, Promega Corporation, Accuweb, and Interpane Coatings. He also volunteered his time, serving as a poll worker with his wife for 20 years and helping the Church Ladies serve lunch at funerals. Alongside Beverly and Mike & Dorothy Loftus, Pogo was a co-founder of the Deerfield Historical Society.
Pogo enjoyed antiquing, driving around with Cindi and Tom Gotthart. He spent many hours by Beverly’s side as she searched for cups & saucers, crystal bells, and dolls for her collection. Pogo and Beverly also enjoyed travelling, visiting friends and relatives across the country. They loved country music and visited Nashville 14 times. They even ventured to Guatemala 5 times to visit their son.
Many will remember Pogo for his stories, jokes and many years being Santa for Deerfield events and surprise visits on Christmas Eve. People who asked him how he got the name Pogo probably heard an impressive story of some physical feat involving a pogo stick. Only he knows which, if any, of these stories are true.
Pogo was proceeded in death by his wife, his parents and his brothers, Clifford and Sanford. He is survived by his sons Curt (Thuong) and Eric (Debi), his grandson Norman (Samantha), granddaughter Amanda of Stoughton, great-grandson Christopher, sisters Lorraine and Ruth, and brother Arne, as well as many nieces and nephews. Pogo is also survived by special friends Cindi and Tom of Wild Rose, and his loving cat, Tina.
Thank you to the staff of Home Again and Agrace Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion they provided for Pogo and his family. Thank you to Pastor Jen for visiting with Pogo and helping him through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Deerfield Lutheran Church steeple fund.
A funeral service will take place at 11AM on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Deerfield Lutheran Church. A visitation will take place from 9AM until the time of service. Immediately following services a burial will take place at Deerfield Lutheran Cemetery.
