Norman L. Halvorsen, of Somerset passed away at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Nursing Home in New Brunswick on Sunday, November 24th. He was 79.
Born and raised in the Prospect Park and Bay Ridge sections of Brooklyn, New York, he has lived in Somerset, NJ since 1987.
He worked as a Program Manager for AT&T, first in New York City then later in Somerset for 30 years before his retirement.
Norman was a US Air Force Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1964 through 1968 as Sergeant.
He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts School in New York City and was a stage actor who performed in local New Jersey community theater. Some of his notable performances in recent years are Inherit The Wind, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, To Kill a Mockingbird; Never The Sinner, The Miracle Worker, and Shadowlands at the Villagers Theater, The Crucible at Playhouse 22 and his daughter Megan's favorite play The Music Man where they performed together on stage.
He was also a member of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) since 1977. He was a Master Mason in the Masonic Fraternity for over 25 years. Norman loved hunting with brother-in- law Mike, gardening, photography, and bird watching from his deck. He enjoyed New York Giants football, Yankees baseball and most of all spending free time perfecting his stage actor skills and volunteering at Villagers Theatre in Somerset.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Maureen; daughter and son-in-law, Megan Halvorsen DePalo and her husband Michael of San Diego, California. His brother, George Halvorsen and his wife Doreen of Hatfield, Pennsylvania; sister, Grace Luckenbach and husband Michael of Fredericksburg, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Private cremation services have been handled under the professional direction of the Gleason Funeral Home, Somerset. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to The Villagers Theater of Somerset NJ by donation or supporting local talent and seeing a show.
