Sarah Jane Stempfel peacefully passed away on February 12, 2024, in Novi, Michigan at the remarkable age of 98.
Born on November 12, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Texas, Sarah later moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she attended the prestigious Ward-Belmont preparatory school before graduating from Vanderbilt University. Sarah, the daughter of Walter J. Smith and Margaret Lightfoot, married Robert Stempfel Jr. and remained devoted to him for an impressive 65 years. She served as a medical technician and made significant financial contributions to her husband's medical education.
While living in Durham, North Carolina, Sarah not only managed a small farm but also raised and showcased German Shepherds and Cairn Terriers. Apart from that, she had a profound interest in the art of sewing, knitting, and various crafts. Moreover, she had a great enthusiasm for reading and could often be found lost in a good book.
Their legacy lives on through their two children Anna (Gary) Zatkoff, Theodore Stempfel III and is further cherished by three grandchildren Joseph (Cate) Zatkoff, Katherine (Simon) Rubin, Roger (Megan) Zatkoff and six great-grandchildren Benjamin Zatkoff, Maxwell Zatkoff, Brian Rubin, Olivia Zatkoff, Reagan Rubin, and Elijah Rubin.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Stempfel Jr., as well as her brother, Robert Smith, and both of her parents.
Sarah's final resting place will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Florida Keys Wild Bird Center.
