Age 89 years, Oscar transitioned this life on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at South Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. Deacon Chaffee was born on February 21, 1936, to James and Nancy (Evans) Chaffee in Rankin County, Mississippi.
He had a great love for animals and was an excellent horse trainer and worked as a young man breaking horses for riding.
Oscar met and was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Henrietta (Talbert) Chaffee in Carthage, Mississippi, on August 12, 1955. In the early 1960's the family moved to Gary, Indiana, and in 1977 moved from Gary, Indiana, to South Haven, Michigan. Deacon Chaffee worked for US Steel in Gary, Indiana, for approximately 31 years, even while living in South Haven until his retirement.
Deacon Chaffee served faithfully as a Deacon and Chairman of the Deacon Board at Lily of the Valley Church, Covert, Michigan under the leadership of Bishop Darryl K. Williams.
Surviving Deacon Chaffee is his devoted wife, Henrietta of 70 years; one son, George, Sr. (Gwen) Davis, DeSoto, Texas; and four daughters: Gloria Braswell, Bangor, Michigan, Delores Chaffee, Covert, Michigan, Jeanette (Carnell) Darling-Whitiker, Bruce, Mississippi; and Mya (Emil) Chaffee-Henderson, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Ten grandchildren; George Jr., Greg, Gary, Teeya, LeAntar, Omar, Xavier, Antwan, Sheraton and Alexander; 16 and ½ great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special friends, Bruce and Vasha Ferguson.
Deacon Chaffee was preceded in death by his parents James and Nancy Chaffee, and 10 siblings.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 P.M., Friday, August 22, 2025, at Lily of the Valley Church, 30600 M-140 Highway, Covert, where friends may visit with family starting at 5:00 P.M.
