Otis Vernon Freeman, known affectionately as Vernon to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at the age of 74 in Piedmont, SC. Born on January 3, 1951, in Greer, SC, Vernon was a man whose presence was a source of joy and wisdom to all who knew him.
Vernon's life was one marked by devotion to God, his family, a passion for his work, and a love for simple pleasures. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Janet S. Freeman, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and cherished memories. His legacy continues through his daughters, Jennifer F. Calhoun and Allison George, married to Chris, who will forever hold their father in their hearts. Vernon's sister, Gail Mowen, and her husband, Tommy, also survive him, sharing in the family's loss.
A proud grandfather, Vernon's joy was multiplied by the laughter and love of his grandchildren, Jacob Calhoun, Joshua Calhoun, McKenzine George, and Amanda Frenetle, married to Cameron. His life was further blessed with the arrival of a great-granddaughter and a great-grandson, who brought him immense happiness in his later years.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Theo Vernon Freeman and Mozelle Moss Freeman. His parents instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and kindness, which he carried throughout his life.
Professionally, Vernon dedicated many years to Satlerfield Woodworking and OBCO Chemical, where his expertise and strong work ethic were highly valued. His colleagues respected him for his knowledge and his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed.
Outside of work, Vernon was an avid golfer, relishing the challenge of the game and the camaraderie of his fellow players. He was also a skilled pool player, often found strategizing his next shot in friendly competition. Baseball was another of Vernon's joys, whether playing in his younger years or cheering on his favorite team from the stands.
Those who knew Vernon will remember him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His sense of humor was infectious, and his laughter could light up a room. Vernon's wisdom was sought after by many, as he had a way of offering guidance that was both thoughtful and sincere.
Vernon's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of enjoying life's simple moments. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
