Owen Thornton

Owen Patrick Thornton, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away on July 7th, 2024 at his home in Morrisonville, NY.
He was born in Plattsburgh, March 19th, 1943, the son of James and Esther (Prunier) Thornton. Owen grew up in Cadyville and graduated from Saranac High School in 1961.
He worked at NYSEG as a lineman and retired in 1998 after the ice storm.
Everyone who knew Owney knew how much he loved his 1951 Chevy pickup. Owney was a member of the North Country Classics and enjoyed attending various car shows. He found joy in camping, racing, and working in his garage. His favorite saying was ODC "Owney Don't Care." This highlights the laid-back personality he had. Owney was always down to have a good time. One can remember Owney for always doing a burnout and carrying a Genesee Light in his hand.
Owen was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Sandra Thornton; sister, Loretta (Thornton) Ashline; brother-in law, Charlie Ashline; sister-in-law, Joan (LaBombard) Thornton; and parents-in-law, Walter and Marian (Dwyer) Akey.
He is survived by his son, Patrick (Karen) Thornton; daughter, Julie (Richard "Foggy") Foster; two grandchildren, Shamus Foster (Maura Trombley), and SaraJo (Wayne) Mattison; one great-grandson, Owen Paul Mattison; brother, Donald Thornton; and brother-in-law, Rick (Diane) Akey.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024 from 10 to 12 pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will follow at 12 pm in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William G. Reamer, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Alexander's Cemetery followed by a reception at West Plattsburgh American Legion Post 1619.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Cadyville Fire Department.
