Pansy Webb Obituary

Pansy H. Webb

Anderson, SC - Pansy Louise Hopkins Webb, 89, died Monday, March 22, after suffering several years with the ravages of dementia.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: Russell and Sabina of New York City and Jonathan and Vicky of Chicago; and grandchildren Ethan and Adelaide of Chicago.

Other survivors: one brother, Roy Hopkins, Jr. in Concord, N. C.; a niece, Laura Rush in Virginia; a nephew, John Rush, Jr. in Georgia; and great niece Lydia in Virginia.

She was born in Salisbury, N. C., December 14, 1931, to the late Roy T. Hopkins, Sr. and the late Mazie Blevins Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by a son, Randall, and a sister, Gay Rush.

A longtime public school English teacher, she took years out while her sons were pre-schoolers, feeling deeply that her calling was to be a stay-at-home mom. Later, she was on the adjunct faculties at Anderson University and Limestone University.

She graduated from Catawba College and earned master's degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Clemson University.

She took pride in her front yard. Lawrence said, "She would let me mow the backyard that nobody saw, but she didn't want me to mess with her beautiful front yard with daffodils, irises, tulips, roses, and azaleas!"

With Lawrence, she loved to travel in Great Britain and also in New England and the western states. They often went to New York for live theatre on Broadway and Off-Broadway.

She thrived on reading and listened to sacred and secular music from Mozart and Bach to Tennessee Ernie Ford to Pete Seeger and John Denver.

When both she and Lawrence retired in 2000, Job One for Pansy was to refurbish the interior of their house: new carpet, new kitchen appliances and cabinets and papering and painting. On these last chores, Lawrence said, "I held the ladder. She would not live in a house I tried to redo."

Before seminary, she spent a summer helping small Baptist mission churches in Ohio. She was a member of Anderson's First Baptist Church, and the family said memorials may be sent to the church at 307 South Manning Street, Anderson SC 29624 or the charity of their choice.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Friends may sign the register at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 SC-81, Anderson, SC 29621 on Thursday, March 25, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
