COHOES Patricia Ann Sweeney, 80, formerly of Manor Ave. passed away sadly and unexpectedly Friday, December 29, 2023.
Born in Elmira, she was the daughter of the late Frances Gilbert and her late stepfather Andrew Gilbert and also daughter of the late Cliff Hamilton. She was the adored sister of the late Daniel J. Gilbert (Gilly) and the late Catherine Rose Gilbert.
Patricia worked for the NYS Dept. of Corrections and Community Supervision for many years until retiring as a Senior Budgeting Analyst. She loved her career and to this day, her prior co-workers and friends share the joy and the fun she always brought to the workplace, along with her signature elegance, always dressed to impress with her beautiful smile. Prior to her career with DOCCS, Patricia was always a leader, serving as Vice President of her class at Elmira Free Academy High School, a cheerleader, graduating with honors, while managing the local ice cream shop and working as a lifeguard at Harris Hill Pool. In her early years, she spent all of her free time riding and taking care of her horses, tending to her family farm and her goat Nanny, but until the very end, Patty's greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and friends. She loved hearing people stories and deeply cherished the role of confidant, mother and friend. Patricia loved her precious rescued fur babies, most recently her late poodle CJ, who gave her so much comfort and love in return. Patricia was the true keeper of a "heart of gold".
Patricia was the loving wife of the late Gerald E. Sweeney and the cherished mother of Kelly Ahearn (Joseph) of Brunswick. She was "Mimi" to her cherished grandson Aiden Ahearn, loving every weekend visit getting his school and sports updates over breakfast and their Christmas holiday sleepovers. She was the beloved stepmother to Timothy E. Sweeney (Juanita) of North Carolina, Daniel Sweeney (Jill) of Grand Island, Colleen Titus (Mark) of Horseheads and both Patricia Schmelzle and Geri-Ann Sweeney of Interlaken. She was also a beloved grandma to Christopher, David, Eli and Sarah Corning, Jacob Sweeney, Melanie Coll, Stephen Gerald Sweeney, Lydia Sweeney, Ryan and Shannon Titus, Joseph Poth, Michael and Kyle Dox, Zachary and Megan Sweeney. Patty also loved and cherished her special cousin Shelia Hungerford of Elmira, who was more like her sister, and her brother-in-law Michael Sweeney of Albany.
If Patricia were with us, she would want to hold on so tight to ALL of her children and say thank you for always loving her, for the many long car trips just to paint her nails and take her to dinner, or to just visit and talk, for the cherished family get-togethers, and for making the sacrifices to be there to support her and dad through the difficult times, especially the past 5 years. Her love was endless for you and now she is the angel watching over you.
"Now I know why you always taught me to be strong, you knew one day I would need the strength to bear your loss".
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes. Relatives and friends may visit from 3 - 6 p.m. prior to the service.
Interment will be on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, where Patricia will lay to rest with her beloved late husband Jerry.
