Patrick "Pat" Lee Bannister, fondly known as Grumpy to his friends and family, departed this world on January 3, 2025, at his home in Mt. Morris.
Born on September 5, 1965, in Durand, Michigan, Pat was the son of the late Roger Roy Bannister and Beverly Lynn Williamson. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the roar of engines.
After graduating from Durand High School in the distinguished class of 1984, Pat dedicated his professional life to Detroit Diesel, where he spent many fulfilling years as an engine tester. His love for machinery was only matched by his commitment to his community, where he served with valor and passion as a volunteer fireman for numerous years.
Pat was a man of many interests, including a spirited enthusiasm for all things related to Jeeps and big trucks. Off-roading was not just a hobby for Pat; it was a way of connecting with nature, feeding his adventurous soul, and enjoying the freedom of the great outdoors. But above all, his true joy came from spending time with his family and friends, whom he captivated with his wise words and generous spirit.
He navigated the roads of life alongside his wife, Valarie, with whom he shared countless unforgettable moments. Together, they raised a beautiful and blended family. Pat's legacy continues through his children, Randi Bannister, Raydean (Drew) Butterfield, William "Billy" (Crystal) Bannister, James "Jimmy" (Madalyn) Bannister and Justin (Kelly) Sass, Zachary Sass, Jason Sass, Tiffany (Tim) Snyder, Patrick Saylor, Austin, Blake Burpee.
The echoes of Pat's laughter and wisdom will live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Granger, Dakota, Jaxson, Gracie, Avery, Alabama "BamBam," Kinsley, Teagan, Josslyn, Morgan, Riley, Logan, Lauren, Reagan, Rowan, Ryann, Serenity, Alisia, Skylar, Kayden, and Jaden. Each one of them carries a spark of their grandfather's spirited legacy.
Pat is lovingly remembered by his brothers, Dan (Susan) Bannister and Mike (Cindy) Bannister who will fondly recall the shared memories of their childhood in Durand. His legacy is also honored by a host of friends whose lives he touched with his vibrant personality and kind heart. Although Pat now journeys beyond the horizon, his vibrant spirit remains a guiding light for all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Roger and Beverly, his grandparents, his grandson Sebastian, and his ex-wife, Cheryl. They have now welcomed him with open arms in a peaceful reunion beyond the stars.
As family and friends reflect on Pat's extraordinary life, they will always remember how his wisdom brightened the darkest of days and his generosity knew no bounds. Pat was truly the spirited soul of the party, the wise voice of reason during challenging times, and the generous friend who enriched the lives of all around him.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Pat will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His story is etched in the memories of his loved ones and the indelible marks he left on their lives. Pat's journey was one of genuine, heartfelt experiences and the fierce love he had for his family-a testament to a life lived to the very fullest.
As the engines quiet and the trails rest for now, we say goodbye to a legend in his own right-the man, the myth, the legend, Patrick Lee Bannister. May his adventures continue on new paths, and may his loved ones find comfort in the beautiful tapestry of memories he wove into their lives.
The Bannister family will receive friends on Sunday, January 12, from 12:00pm-5:00pm at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 501 N. Saginaw St. Durand.
